Speaking of Quick Deliveries, moms of 3 or more?

My first was 10 hours total.

My second baby came start to finish 4.5 hours.  Which was awesome for going med-free but intense of course.

I know they always say the second comes way faster than the 1st, but what about the 3rd?  Are they wild cards or in general did you have another fast or faster delivery?

  • I'm only on my second but I am terrified of a quicker delivery this time. My first was under 4 hours. I've always heard that your 3rd is much like your 1st.

  • Generally speaking each labor gets shorter. It is uncommon but not rare that a second, third, fourth, etc....labor will be longer.

  • #1 - 17 hours (OP)

    #2 - 7 hours

    #3 - 20 hours (OP)

    I'm praying #4 isn't posterior too...

  • 1st-hard to guage since it was induced because I was dumb and didn't know I could wait it out after my water broke.  So from water breaking to birth it was 14.5h.

2nd-4.5h.  Intense it right, but I was already dilated to 5cm with bulging waters for over a week, so I guess I started halfway done.

3rd-4 days.  No really.  Contractions every 11m for 3 days (minus about 4 hours each night that they'd slow to twice an hour).  4th day they were 7m apart when I got up.  He was born at 4:30 that afternoon.  Posterior with a nuchal hand.

4th-4.5h.  Water broke again pre-contractions, waited it out and they started 20h later.  That was an intense labor for sure.  I was only like 2-3cm dilated and not very effaced when it started, so there was a lot of work to be done.  She had a nuchal hand too.

  • My first and second were about the same. My sisters have 4 kids each but the labours never got progressively shorter. My one sister had her second in less than a few hours but her third and fourth were near 10 hours. My other sister's fouth child was born in only a few hours while the others were long.

My grandmother had 12 kids and all lasted many hours except her 4th and her 12th. (could have been 3rd and 12th, I'd have to confirm but it was the 3rd or 4th that was her quickest and easiest.)

  • FTM myself, but my mom had five kids. I was her first, with a 2 day labor (sorry mom) and then my siblings were shorter, like 10-12 hours each. She never had a super quick labor, but they certainly were faster than the first one!
  • my mw says #3 is a toss up

but for me #2 was 3 hours longer

  • my friend the L+D nurse swears that it's well known on her ward that third labours are a "wildcard." Generally, labours get shorter every time, but she swears that the third labour is often the exception. For whatever reason, third labours can be super-fast or drag on forever.

  • My MW told me that 3rds can be wild cards and can go longer than second labors but rarely longer than the 1st.

For me: Ds1 was 30 hours

    DD was 8 hours

    DS2 was 6 hours

  • #1 was well over 48 hours. #2 was 7 hours. #3 was 45 minutes. I was already at the hospital for an NST. #4 was 4 hours, and #5 was 3 1/2 hours.
  • My first: 12.5 hours

    My second: 7 hours

    My third (induced): 4.5 hours

So if i keep up this same pattern, I should be looking at 3-4 hours. YIKES!! That would definitely be fine with me though!

  • DS1-induction 4 hours

    DS 2-spontaneous 3 hours

DS3-spontaneous 8 hours (although my slowest and most painful labor, it was my favorite by far; fast is not always ideal)

  • My 1st was 5 hrs, 2nd was 1.5 hrs, and 3rd was 13 hrs (at the hospital) I also did quite a few hours at home bc I didn't know if it was the real thing or not. (I had my membranes stripped at my appt, that afternoon and was cramping when I left the office) I've had my membranes stripped before and it never started labor.,,that time it did! Hoping #4 is more like #2, short and fast...even though it was really intense, it was my easiest delivery.

I also dilate early..with #1, I started dilating at 32 weeks and was 4cm for a month before i actually went into labor. #2, i was 5cm for like 2 weeks, my midwife said everything was ready to go, I just needed some contractions. And I think i was 3-4cm for a couple weeks with #3 before I went into labor. So I always have a little head start
