pacifier

LO has never been too fond of the paci EXCEPT when she is sleeping or going to sleep. I honestly don't think she can sleep without it. She dozed off earlier and I got up to put her in her crib and she woke a little with her head going back and forth rooting for the paci. I stuck it in her mouth and her eyes rolled back in her head and was out like a light. How bad is it going to be when she gets older and I have to take it away? What age are you supposed to wean from them?

Re: pacifier

  • I should add that she eventually spits it out, so I guess she can sleep without it, but can't fall asleep without it.

  • DS#1 will be 2 in November and I am going to take it away, he still uses it at night.  I'l have to think of some creative way to tell him he can't have it anymore!!  DS 2 takes one too, I think I'm going to take it away much sooner this time!

  • My LO needs it to fall asleep as well but also spits it out sometimes in the night and stays asleep.  My DD loved her paci as well for naps and night time.  I thought it would be hard to take it away but when she was a little past 1 year old I just took it away cold turkey and she was fine!  I think you won't have an issue especially if your LO doesn't need it all day, all the time even during waking hours.  If she just needs it for sleeping I think it's easier to wean from.  Also, if you replace it with a snuggle toy she can safely have in her crib, then that should help as well.

  • We just talked about this with the dr at her four month appointment.  We mentioned we were thinking of weening her off the paci, but the dr said not to worry about it now.  She said they're very dependent on the suck reflex for comfort right now, and that she'll talk to us about weening the paci around 9 monhs.

  • My LO weaned himself and just stopped taking it a couple weeks ago . It had been a great sleep crutch for us I'm glad he's not dependent on it but now I'm at a loss when he wakes up at night! Usually I end up feeding him when the paci might have done the trick before. So I'd be happy that's still working if I were you!

  • Meh, there are worse things than a paci in my opinion. I was bound and determined that my oldest would not have his after he was a year. He only had it when he went to sleep mind you. He had it until he was 18 months and started biting holes in them, so we would throw them away one by one and I never bought more. It was a great way to do it! My youngest looses his at night, and I go and give it back. Once we wean him from the swaddle and the incline, and he's comfortable enough in his crib, when he looses it, I won't play that game and he'll have to cry a little. But for now we give it back. It can be exhausting though Sad It's the only thing that soothes him now though, and I'm not willing to be a 24/7 human paci.
