Take Home Outfit - Cold Weather

As a FTM, I feel clueless about this. What is an appropriate, yet realistic outfit to take baby home in? I live in Michigan, and Jan/Feb can be a nasty time of the year. I registered for a BundleMe... that's about as far as I've gotten.

Any thoughts from other cold weather mommies? Thank you!

Re: Take Home Outfit - Cold Weather

  • I am in Canada in one of the colder provinces. Honestly, I think that take home outfits are a bit over rated due to the cold weather here. Once you put on a t-shirt, pyjamas (fleece ones) and put them in the car seat, wrap LO in a blanket, cover LO with more blankets.... Really, it is a bit excessive. Unless you plan on taking lots of photos, or have a family heirloom take home outfit... Just keep it simple and keep baby warm. Well that's my plan anyways. Our family has no passed down take home outfits, so we are just going to do some warm Jammies.

  • Thanks for your response, that is helpful. I guess I should have clarified that I don't really mean the froo-froo take home outfit... just a weather-appropriate outfit to take baby home in that would be realistic for me to get her into.

Is it realistic to think I could put footie PJs on a newborn?

  • I too live in Michigan and was hoping to find something warm for her to wear home. I'm planning on waiting till December to purchase it though.

You can put footies on a nb. We live in a year round warm climate, except winter nights its freezing, and we've managed with blankets. DS's homecoming outfit was a personalized set and it included a personalized blanket so that was nice for his little homecoming pictures.

  • I'm in WI, so I am familiar with freezing temperatures. This is what we are bringing our LO home in:

I also registered for the Bundle Me and plan on having a couple of extra fuzzy blankets on hand to help cover the car seat.  DH will go out and heat up the car ahead of time, so there will only be a short time that LO will be actually in the cold.

  • I'm not sentimental so I don't really do a "special" take home outfit. We'll probably just do a footed sleeper, hat, and plenty of blankets over top once DS2 is in the carseat.  For us, the baby will only be outside for a minute to click into the carseat base and to walk into the house.

ETA: Yes, newborns in footie pajamas.  Honestly, i think footed sleepers were the only thing that DS1 was in for the first 3 months of his life!

  • I have always used a cozy sleeper or pajamas to take my babies home. There is nothing like a newborn all snuggled up.

  • Hey fellow Michiganders!

This is what I'm planning on purchasing for the baby to go home in:

I also purchased a winter bunting, so he'll be in that as well.

  • Minnesota mama here....I haven't found one yet, but also going with the footed pjs and I have  this cozy fleece hooded item (not sure what to call it, it covers feet and covers hands and hooded, very cozy) and probably lots of blankets. And yes my husband will warm the car ahead of time.

  • I love those little bear outfits!! I'll either do that or I found some Michigan State footie pj's that were adorable! :)

  • I would do the bundle me and then something like this:

    https://www.carters.com/carters/3-Piece-Ribbed-Cotton-Set/V_121A822,default,pd.html?cgid=carters-baby-neutral-sets-little-layette-sets

The bundle me will keep the baby warm, the two piece outfit will keep from pulling on the umbilical chord.  You could definitely do a heavier outfit, but this is along the lines of what I am doing.

    That outfit is so cute!
