Ok, so since you are my resident expert on pumping....when do you think can I start going longer stretches in between pumping sessions (especially over night?) - not that we are anywhere close to sleeping through the night, but I am curious what the process is and how it is done. I have heard six weeks is when supply is established, others have said twelve weeks. I know, everyone is different. But how was it for you? Do you pump longer, but less often? Teach me, oh wise one!
Re: Super - a pumping question
Not Super, but I still pump, so I feel qualified to answer. At first, I pumped at night during every bottle feeding (I didn't breast feed at the time). At the end of the second month, I stopped pumping during middle of the night feedings because I had enough pumped supply that I didn't need to. As a result, the amount I pumped first thing in the morning was more than other pumping sessions (makes sense).
My suggestion is to measure how much you currently pump in a 24 hour period. Cut out one of the night feedings and see if the pumped amount remains the same (you might need to pump a little longer during the other pumping sessions and do more squeezing to help get things going). Measuring is your best way of making sure you are not impacting your supply.
Good luck! Cutting out those night time pumping sessions made me a much happier and well rested mom!
My Blog
Thanks to both of you! I'll track my output (I have avoided doing that as I am prone to obsess usually) for a bit and then try to cut out a feeding.
It's not like I would sleep anyways at night - Aidan still wakes every three hours - but my nipples need a break. Seriously. But I still need to have enough milk for both boys and at least to freeze a bag a day. Guess I turned into a breastmilk hoarder.
I'll give it a whirl. I am still amazed how my body manages to put out 1,2 liters on average Adam on oatmeal and water. And beer. I have had a dark beer per day - relaxes my stomach, it seems.
