Food Allergy

Food allergy and daycare

My 3 year old nephew was recently diagnosed with a severe coconut allergy.  He attends a daycare in which parents rotate bringing in snack each day. My sister has notified the school principal and all of my nephew's teachers of this allergy and instructed them to be sure to read the labels of the snacks that are brought in to be sure there is no coconut in them.  They also have an epi-pen in case they need it and instructions on what to do in case of an emergency.  So far the school and his teachers have failed.  My sister got a call that he was having difficulty breathing one day after snack and she rushed in (she works very close by) and she had to rush him to the ER.  The teacher didn't think chocolate chip cookies would have coconut in them, so didn't bother to check the label.  Another day she was running late dropping him off and she got there at snack time.  Another teacher handed her son some snack (I forget what she said it was)... My sister asked straight up if she checked the label..she said she did not...and wouldn't you know it contained coconut.  My sister has offered to bring in a different snack for her son or even to bring in snack for all the kids herself every day, but is meeting resistance.  Does anyone have any suggestions for a tastefully written letter that she can provide the school to send home with his classmates to ask for the other parents help in picking snacks that don' t have the allergen in them? I believe she was going to meet with the principal to be sure this doesn't happen again, but it wouldn't hurt to ask for the other parent's help, right? TIA!

Re: Food allergy and daycare

  • Personally he needs his snacks packed from home daily. If the daycare is not going to allow this then I would find a new provider. Also sending a letter home will mean nothing to some parents. Also not everyone can read a food label...

  • I think he should be sent with his own snacks everyday and tell the teachers he can only eat his snacks. sending a letter out just might mean nothing to some parents. or they will be like the one teacher and just not think that something could have coconut in them.
  • If he has a diet statement from the physician stating that he has a severe allergy, the daycare should either be required to provide a safe snack or let the child's parents provide one. They cannot and should not rely on the parents of the other children or the room monitors to check food labels or say if a snack is safe or not. If they meet resistance, I would have the physician call and speak with the director.

  • like PP said.  Your sister needs to pack his (ONLY HIS) snack daily and the teachers need to know that they cannot give him anything else, only what your sister packs.

If nothing changes after she speaks to the principle, I would look into other day care.

    Good luck
