staying awake during meetings

I don't know if it's just that I'm having a rough couple weeks, but I've been in several meetings lately where I just cannot keep my eyes open.  I never really had this issue before.  Even today I was in a meeting with only a couple people and it was a fairly engaging discussion (not just a presentation in a dark room).  What tips or tricks do you have to stay awake?  I'm not a coffee/soda drinker, and sometimes it's just not an option to get up and leave.  Help!

  • When would it ever be an option to get up and leave?  Maybe now's the time to try coffee and as beneficial a sleep schedule as you can with a 10 month old.  Eat healthy foods and take vitamins!

Haha, I meant just get up and walk around.  Obviously I can't just leave, but sometimes in a large group it's ok to get up and move but it's harder to do that in a small conference room.

Chug a glass of cold water before you head into the meeting. Take a brisk walk around your area / up and down the stairs to get your blood flowing a few minutes before you head in there. Bonus points if you are able to step outside to get some fresh air while doing this little mini excercise break

This! Also try not to eat a lot of carbs before hand or at lunch and stick with protein.

  • Maybe try bringing water and taking notes?
  • Have some really cold water on hand to drink, and maybe try chewing some cinnamon gum.

  • This happens to me. It's so bad that my boss asked if I have narcolepsy, and I actually kind of wondered if I might. I actually DO get up and leave if it's a bigger meeting--go to the bathroom or something. Drink water. The best thing is if I can occupy myself doing something like making a grocery list or drawing out a calendar. That also only works in larger meetings. We had an incredibly boring webinar yesterday and I slept on and off through half of it despite my best efforts not to. It's like I'm drugged and just cannot keep my eyes open. I think a lot of people don't understand this if it doesn't happen to them.

You could try a short walk a little bit before the meeting. That can help. Good luck!
