Easing the transition RE: Moving 3yr &8mo

We are moving from our apartment into a town house the first weekend of next month. I'm nervous for my 3 year old because he keeps asking if we will take his toys with him, if we're taking Tiny. If he'll still have TV at the new house. I explained to him that yes we're taking all those things, plus we will get a back yard, and he can have his power wheel at home now instead of Nonny and Poppas.

Its in the same complex so I know we will need to avoid our apartment as much as possible with him because this is what he knows as home.

We're going to take him to the paint store a few days before move in and have him pick out colors for his new room. I've also got some awesome new toys stashed for his new room so he can get excited. Presents from the house.

Any tips or tricks? My parents are coming up to help us move and the boys will be hanging out with our neighbor during moving day.

I think the things you are doing will be good for him. We made sure DS's furniture was in a similar set up when we moved. We thought DS was going to have a hard transition and he didn't have any issues.

Did you involve your kid in the move? My mom offered to take the boys to childrens museum during the day all day so we can get everything moved w/o them underfoot. But I'm worried he'd have a hard time dealing with leaving this home in the morning, and going to a new home that night

  • I would not worry. DS1 has moved twice (both moves to different countries) and DS2 only once. The best thing to do is talk about it. Our situation was different in that we were separated from our stuff for 3-4 months each time and moved into completely different cultures. They both have done extremely well.  In fact, our transitions (co-sleeping to big boy bed, crib to big boy bed, both boys sleeping in same room) have all happened once we moved into a new house.  I think it would have been much harder staying put and trying to transition.

My mom took our dd when we moved. They stopped by the new house to say hi and check on us. We then had dinner at my parents and brought her home to her new room after dinner. We didn't have any problems.
