I don't think there's a consensus - some people like it (me) and some people find them useless.
I bought 2 organic ones - 1 black and 1 white - directly from Isabel & Ingrid when they had a 50% off sale a while back. They are very comfortable and held up well with repeated washing. I used them exclusively from 14w to 23w before I switched over to maternity pants.

I've used both the Ingrid & Isabel ones and the Target knock-off ones. Target is way cheaper. The material on the I&I ones is softer, but maybe b/c of that it seems to roll down easier vs the Target ones. They both do the job though.
I HATED maternity clothes and will try to wear my regular pants & skirts unbuttoned with an elastic band and belly band coverup as long as possible.

I have the one from Target. I really disliked it. I used it during the summer and it was so freaking hot. Plus, in my tops you could still see that my pants were unbuttoned. It made my stomach a strange shape. This probably doesn't apply to you though since you will be wearing it for fall/winter.
These worked great for the few weeks that my pants were getting too tight but I hadn't yet purchased maternity clothes. I just bought one at Target. I don't even like target but their belly band was great. And I bought several of their maternity tank tops which I LOVE and still am wearing 3 months PP.
I wouldn't buy more than one or two belly bands if you want another color. You won't wear them for that long. And maternity pants are so flippin comfortable that once I bough a couple pairs I never went back to my non-maternity clothes.
