De quervain tendonitis - wrist pain

Has anyone have this, or heard of this? A few weeks ago I started experiencing pain in my wrists from picking up the baby. Now it is too much, I'm wearing wrist braces in both sides but doesn't help much. I saw a dr today who referred me to a hand specialist for possible cortisone injection treatment (ouch). I have never heard of this happening to anyone, I did hear about the condition in my anatomy and physiology class a while ago but thought it was super rare. Now Im dealing w it. I'm very worried bc LO is 12 lbs now and will get heavier! It break my heart bc I'm his main caregiver. It is also more common over 40, I'm 40. Oh, and my baby is 12 lbs.

I have carpal tunnel in both wrists from picking up kids.  I sleep with wrist braces on and pop Advil like candy.  It has gotten a lot better (I was waking up with tingling in my fingers).  It stopped once my kids got old enough to move on their own.  But now I have back problems because they are lots heavier.  Protect yourself.

I had that somewhat, though not a severe as you are describing and I certainly didn't feel it until my son was over 1 and over 25 lb.  I hope the cortisone shots help you. I guess try to limit that sort of lift and improvise with holds. Hopefully the cortisone shots and wrist braces help.

I have De Quervain's tendonitis.  It is somewhat quiet right now for some reason.  I was all set to have a releasing surgery last month because the pain was so bad.  The surgeon was willing to do the procedure although said that he sees that the condition improve once hormones stabilize or breastfeeding is over with.  I had two injections of cortisone in two years (a few months after my son was born and then during my daughter's pregnancy).  They helped ease the pain tremendously.  Recommendation of only two injections to be done since the skin thins as welll as the subcutaneous tissue with each dose.   Ice water sprayed over my wrist also helped from time to time. I am glad not to have had the procedure done for now and really concentrate on using other muscles or angles to do things.  I am hoping that the whole syndrome just goes away someday.

Had it in both wrists when my daughter was about 6-8 months.  Hurt terribly but the cortisone shots cleared it with no problem.  I was 32 at the time and thought the shots would hurt like hell but I don't remember them hurting much at all.  I received treatment at a pain specialist's office and within 2 days, I was fine.

Thanks for the replies. So, the pain goes away or gets better with cortisone shots, but you have to continue taking care of your child? Does it come back when you start picking your baby up?   And using that tendon again?

I had this with my oldest who was a very heavy baby (nearly 15 pounds at two months).  I normally have carpal tunnel anyway.  Mine got better with me wearing braces and as she got older and more able to support herself.  I only remember it really hurting for a few weeks.  Good luck!

I had developed this at about 7 mos. pregnant and it got worse after DD was born. When DD was about 2 mos old I finally went to see a hand specialist.  They gave me the braces to wear and I felt like it was getting worse! So after about a month of those I went ahead and got the shots in both wrists.  That was April 27th of this year and I haven't had an issue since!!  I am also over 40.  42 to be exact :)  I hope you are feeling better now!!
