Sleep Training

First, I will say I was 100% against the Ferber method. I have all the other books about ways to sleep train without CIO and had been trying for weeks now to get him to sleep on his own. We were putting him down awake but drowsy and sitting in the room with him, ect.

LO was starting to have harder times getting down at night and then was waking up about 4 times a night and would be wide awake for hours. He then started to have these two hour screaming fits and arching his back. I decided if he could have a screaming fit before every nap and at night and scream into my ears for hours, then we would CIO.

The past three nights we made sure he was full and very tired. We put him down awake and checked on him during the intervals. He was always asleep within 45 minutes. Now we are working on his naps.

He also does not wake in the middle of the night anymore!

Re: Sleep Training

  • Ha! We're experiencing pretty much exactly the same thing.  I was also 100% against crying it out, but nothing else had worked for us either.  We started Ferber on Friday.  The first day was the worst - she only cried for 20 minutes, but it felt longer.  But, last night she only cried for about 5 minutes before falling asleep.  She's also cut out her middle of the night wakings.  I still feel a little guilty about letting her cry and am cautiously looking for any change in behavior that could be attributed to the sleep training :)  But I feel reassured when she wakes up every morning and greets me with a huge smile and lots of kisses.

  • I sleep trained DS at 18 months. I'm ready to do it with DD but they share a room so I can't let her cry. She's currently up about 4 times a night. If she's still doing it a few weeks from now I will send DH and DS to my inlaws and get started.

  • As soon as I noticed a change in cry, we went in there and changed his outfit and bedding because he had sweated through from the crying stress. Then he went right to sleep.

  • I am glad that you found a solution and are getting some sleep.  I am having similar problems with DD and have been for over a month.  I am at my wit's end and running on empty here.  I am reluctant to do any CIO methods, because I have tried before and couldn't let her cry for more than a few minutes.  It sounds like it wasn't that bad for you.  Did you read the book or just look it up online?
