I have a question about $$daycare

I'm thinking about when I will start working and estimating how old my DS will be.

I'm guessing he'll be about 1 1/2 by the time I start my internship, and about 2 years old by the time I get my job- depending on when they hire me in.

I'm reading that preschool doesn't usually start until they're around 3-5 years old.

Instead of me working nights/DH working days, I'd like to just put him in daycare...

I'm wondering how much you spend on daycare a month?

I read it can be up to $900/month- that's crazy!

Re: I have a question about $$daycare

  • $900/month!  I wish!  I'm paying $1200/month, and that is incredibly cheap around me - I got an introductory price for a new center that opened.  Most centers here are around $1800/month for full time (5 days a week, 7am - 6pm).  I live in a very expensive area though.

  • When I was checking daycare prices, the cheapest in my area was $125 for up to a year old.  After a year old, it was $100 a week, until they were 3.

I believe it's going to vary greatly depending on where you live.

  • It really depends on what kind of area you live in.  I have DD in an in home center that is only $100 per week, but went to tour a large center for when she turns one and it is $165pw/$660pm.  I know they have a few that go up to $900 here, but the average is about $135 per week around here for a nice center.

  • The day cares that I have looked into in my area around about $900/month. I was also shocked at that price...I don't really know what I was expecting but certainly not $900.  I haven't look into home day cares yet.  It is on my list once I get more serious about finding job for either next January or August when school goes back!

  • $900!? Sounds like a deal! When we looked for Logan it was going to be almost $1300 and that was just for 4 days a week. This was at a daycare center versus a home daycare. It's so expensive around here. I think it really depends on your area though. My SIL lives in a small town and only pays like $600 a month.

  • We pay $150/week for an in home daycare (its $100/wk for the second child).

Brynn goes to a pre-school 3 days a week, which is in a daycare center and that is $129 week (for just 3 days).  But, like Ainslie said, you are paying for what you get.  Next year when Brynn goes to kindergarten (OMG!), Paige will go to the daycare center full time.  The price does vary by the age of the child, but not much.  Ours also offers a 10% discount if you pay monthly instead of weekly.

  • Honestly it's hard to compare on a site like this. Talk with people in your area. Get a list from the county or state of licensed dc facilities, inhome and centers.
Dd goes to a small center. It's in an old building. They don't have lots of extra's like yoga or extra music classes. But the same 2 ladies have been there for years in the infant room and they love her. It's 125 a week. In the 4 yr old room they have a state certified teacher but not the younger ones.
I'll probably move her when she's 2.5 to a bigger center with more extras and
certified teachers. The new center charges 160 for infants, 140 for 2 yr olds. We live in a lcol area.

  • If Asher went fulltime, it would cost $1300/month. He only goes 2 days a week though. There are only a few daycares in our area and they are all pricey.

  • Audra goes to an in-home daycare which is $175/week for her so roughly $700/month. Her normal infant price I believe is $195/week ($780/month) but she wanted an infant spot filled when we were looking so she dropped the price. Like a PP said, we have to pay that price for the week regardless of whether Audra goes the full week or not.

  • Google daycare in your town and see if any websites pop up.  I used one that lists all of the daycares by town in CT, and it gave prices.  For a center daycare to go full-time I would have paid ~$3500/mo for both girls.  For them to go full-time to an in-home daycare would cost ~$1200/mo for both.  Right now we pay $225/week for the two of them to go 3 days a week.  The prices all include a discount for twins.

One thing to keep in mind is that infants are usually the most expensive age.  I know that at the in-home daycare we use now there is no price difference, but at center daycares there is normally.  So for a 2 year old you could be paying significantly less.  Another thing to look into when the time comes is what programs they have.  Some centers by me do daycare and preschool, which might be something beneficial to look into you if your LO will be starting closer to the preschool age.  I would also start researching soon - I've heard of waiting lists in some areas, especially for the cheaper or more desirable daycares.

$600/month regardless of age.  This is in-home daycare which is usually more affordable than a daycare center.
this!! A home daycare is almost always cheaper than a centre. Also, centres usually get a bit cheaper as the kids get older.

  • We pay $282 per week for a daycare center in the Western NY area called Doodlebugs. The price reduces at 18 months and again where they are 3 years.  They have the Watch Me Grow video monitoring program so I can log in and watch Lucas at work periodically throughout the day.  Home daycare is less expensive but you really have to trust where you are sending them. I have family members and friends with bad experiences with home daycare.  So you really want to ask lots of questions and be super in tune to what is going on.  I'd show up unexpectedly early and during the day if you can.
  • I live in a small town and pay $450 a month for Hank for an at home daycare for teachers children only. Next year it will be about $425.  There are some perks to living in a small town.

  • At our local Y it's $740/mo for child care. 6wks up to kindergarten! We have a small community and I know the staff really well along with most other kids so I feel good about using our Y. Plus they have a great payment plan if the cost is too much. If you have a Y, know your Y really well, I'd check out their child care! We've been extremely blessed in ours.

  • I live in a rural area I guess you could say. Daycare here is much cheaper than most places, then again we get paid much less than most places.

I pay 140 per week,  reguardless if she goes all week or not, once she is potty trained it will go down to 125 per week. I think I should start potty training now.

  • I think it depends a lot on where you are, and whether you do an in home vs. a center or school. We do a licensend in home daycare, and it's $95/week. BUT we live in a very small, rural community. My sister lives in a big city, and they pay $250/week at a daycare center.
