Nipples Hurt When Cold

First off I have to say that my nipples have done great so far! Aside from being a little sore those first few days, I have had no nipple issues. But now as colder weather approaches, I am noticing that when I am cold, my nips feel extremely sore, almost cramp like. Anyone else? I'm guessing that aside from keeping warm, there really isn't much I can do. If there is, please inform!! TIA!

  • I have the same problem. I always have a sweater on. I'll be interested to see if anyone has any answers.

  • It sounds like you may have vasospasms.  My LC noticed it at one of the support group meetings when I asked her about my sensitivity to cold.  When I get cold my nipples turn white, which means that the capillaries are constricting and causing reduced blood flow.  It is extremely painful and it hurts to have any pressure on them.  The LC suggested I take magnesium, 1000 mg a day, to help with the sensitivity.  She also suggested putting the little hand warmers in my bra.  Both of these things have help tremendously. Kellymom has some information on vasospams, so check out the site.

  • I agree, sounds like vasospasms to me. Not fun! Thanks for the hand warmer suggestion. Brilliant!

  • I've never heard of vasospasms so I will look this up and see if that's my problem. I was having intense nipple pain while pregnant ... feels like they are on fire. I thought maybe it was a pg symptom ... you know how you can never quite remember if something was an issue before you got pregnant? so I assumed it was related to pregnancy but now that LO is 6 weeks old I still get that pain from time to time.
