Road Trip Tips for driving with a 2-year old?

Hello :) At the end of the month I am going to be driving long-distance with my almost 2-year old son. We'll be driving about 20 hours over 2 days. I've never done anything like this before myself, let alone with a toddler. Do you have tips for keeping him entertained and happy? Anything will help! TIA!

  • We bought a DVD player for the car and DS watches and Elmo videos. Get a lap tray that has slots on the sides for toys and crayons. Keep a stash of snacks in the front seat with you.

My biggest challenge when driving alone with DS is that it never fails that he is asleep when I have to pee! I have stopped and tried to put him in the stroller to keep him asleep while I go.

  • We drove from Florida to NJ over the summer and dd stayed entertained with our phones. We put shows she likes on there and she also played with apps we got her.

  • We've done several long road trips and my daughter always does amazingly well. She'll entertain herself with her toys (dolls, cars, books, Magnadoodle, etc...) We give her my ipad with apps and videos (TV shows) to play with/watch. If she gets really restless, we'll setup our travel DVD player with a movie. Good luck.

We haven't done a trip more than 5 hours, but DS will just sit there and watch DVD's without argument the whole time. We have DVD's of his favorite shows, and I think the fact that they have multiple episodes on them as opposed to one story line holds his attention better then a traditional movie. He has watched Nemo and the Toy Story movies pretty happily though.
We also always keeps books and little toys in the car that he asks for when he's bored.
