New & Need Some Advice

A friend told me about this board.  I feel like my daughter is struggling and I don't know how to get her the support she needs.

My daughter is 4 1/2. She has gone to preschool since she was 2.  Last year, in her 3's class, the teacher noticed a few things (which I agreed with) which led me to have her evaluated by our local school systems early childhood services.  My daughter now has an IEP which enables her to go to a social skills class once a week for an hour and 1/2.  My daughter was tested in January 2012 for motor skills.  There were 3 areas where she scored poorly and I was told to have her retested in 6 months.  As of September, my daughter still has not been retested by the early childhood services for motor skills.  My husband and I had our daughter tested by a private physical therapist in May and she has been going for weekly physical therapy since June.  The physical therapist just retested my daughter last week and all of her scores for stationary sklls, locomotor and object manipulation were way below where they should be.

My daughter's teacher this year has seen and agrees with the following behaviors which were brought up by her teacher and I last year.  My daughter likes to repeat things over and over.  She copies what other children say often.  She does not know how to talk and interact with her classmates.  She talks very loudly in the classroom.  I have had her hearing tested and it is not an issue.  Many times when I ask my daughter things, she just does not answer me.  Also, my daughter does not know how to read social cues.  She does not seem to be able to answer questions correctly.  If the teacher asks questions, my daughter says things which are just not fitting.  Her teacher mentioned that she may have a sensory processing issue.  The teacher is calling the early childhood to have my daughter retested in the motor skills area and also todo further testing in the speech/language area.  Do I look into private speech/language therapy for my daughter which my insurance does not cover unless my daughter has an autistic spectrum disorder or a medical need?

Is there anything I should ask for such as testing to be done?  I spoke to my doctor who mostly has a wait and see approach.  She said she doesn't think my daughter is on the autistic spectrum but she doesn't feel any other testing is warranted right now.  The social skills teacher that my daughter works with tells me each week that my daughter is doing great.  I don't see any improvement.

Any help would be appreciated!  Julie

Re: New & Need Some Advice

  • Thank you auntie!  I feel like my PCP just does not want to do more.  I asked about testing for autism last year and she said it wasn't appropriate.  I need to find a new PCP if she does not work with me on the referral for my daughter.

Definitely push your PCP for a referral.  Especially since the waiting lists can be soooo long.  We won't be able to get in to see the developmental pedi until June and this was after a 6 month wait for a private OT evaluation.  Other people on the board have mentioned 12-24 month wait lists for a developmental pedi!

It's good that you're going through the school system, too.  Welcome to the board!

I had no idea about the wait time to see a developmental pediatrician. Thanks for the heads up! I am going to call my PCP today to get the referral process started.
