Stomach sleeping

DS seems to always sleep better on his stomach but it has always been when DH or I have been holding him either across our legs or on our stomachs. I know over the years the way infants should be put down to sleep has kept changing. Does anyone now put their LO to sleep on their tummy? How do you do it and keep from worrying about them being able to breathe? I know I'm a survivor of stomach sleeping. If DS sleeps better this way should I consult with his pedi to see if we can do this more regularly?

Re: Stomach sleeping

  • DS sleeps on his tummy during naps (sleeps way better on this tummy) but at night we put him down on his back.

I am trying tonight actually putting him down on his tummy for a bit (while Im up and in the room) then switching him over to his back.  well see how this goes...

  • It's safest for babies to sleep on their backs. That has been proven by statistics. I wouldn't let my child sleep on her stomach because I believe that is the safest place for kids.

  • Our son sleeps on his stomach. He is able to roll himself over and is constantly readjusting and switching which side his face is. He lifts his head high and can hold it for a couple of minutes. We are very comfortable with him sleeping as he does. We keep the monitor on our nightstand with the volume up and we do check in on him. We make sure to burp and rock him before we lay him down, so in our case at least, he rarely spits up in large quantities while sleeping. If anything it is small amounts and he just switches his head to the other side. Bottom line is do what you are comfortable with.
  • I also put LO down for naps on her tummy, and if I think she might wake for a night feeding (she's been STTN) I'll put her on her tummy for the first part and then put her on her back for the rest of the night.

  • Our 8 week old DS has been sleeping on his stomach since he was aboout 3 weeks old. The nurse put him on his stomach in the hospital & he slept great. This is literally the only way he will sleep unless in our arms. He lifts his head up from sie to side when he needs to & we also have a video monitor so we watch closely. he sleeps in his bassinet not far from us & I probably wake up 20 times a night to check on him. Lol. Our pedi said this is fine & if he is comfortable to allow him to sleep on his tummy.

  • my first one slept on his stomach, would not sleep on his back at all. As soon as I would lay him down he would wake up and scream. So I let him sleep on his back, he is 3 yrs old and to this day still sleeps on his stomach.

But I just had my second on 2 weeks ago today and he only sleeps on his back. He wont sleep on his stomach, only when he is being held will he sleep on his stomach other than that he sleeps on his back. I personally think it depends on the child. Each child is comfortable in a different position, and if they can breathe than who is to keep them from being comfortable.

  • We just started putting my son on his stomach at 4 months, at that point he could hold his head up and switch positions. Before that he always slept on his back and then one night he decided he was going to be a stomach sleeper. For three nights we tried having him on his stomach and then flipping him to his back that lasted about 5 minutes and then he woke up screaming. So after three nights of no sleep for all of us my son became a stomach sleeper.
  • My LO is 7 weeks and has been sleeping on his tummy for weeks now. He sleeps much better this way. We keep a fan on to make sure he doesn't rebreathe carbon dioxide and make sure there is nothing around his face.
