Fish out of water

Tried to put Samuel in his crib ... Fail. I think I tried too many things at once: transition to crib and putting to bed drowsy. Or it could be he had to poo as evidenced by him filling his drawers when I was burping him. Another issue is that he kept flopping like a fish in his crib. Thrashing his arms and moving his feet up and down like a fish out of water. He's used to the snuggle of the RnP because I tuck an A and A blanket in it. I put him in a sleep sack in his crib. Thoughts on how to help this? My first thought is to put him in a sleek sack in his RnP but that doesn't eliminate the snuggle factor of the RnP vs the crib. It's like we've been saying on TB: the RnP helps our babies sleep but a b!tch to transition them out of it.

  • Ahhhh...you ladies...I feel so bad for you, but I'm so glad I didn't fall to the hype of the RNP.

Anyways...I would swaddle him, or put the sleep sack on and get his arms in there. Or get a woombie, or something similar. He needs to feel secure until he's comfortable in the crib. It'll be an easier transition.

Don't give up. He will sleep in the crib if you let him, eventually. He won't be 16 and be a fish out of water when you put him to bed J/K. I know this isn't one of your worries, just thought I'd help you appreciate that he is still very young and it's ok he's not getting used to the crib right away!) Keep trying to soothe him if he gets upset. Try to set him in there when he's fast asleep, not drowsy (at least not yet, do that after he's used to the crib.)  I would go cold turkey off that RNP. Use only your swing/bouncer for daytime and crib at nighttime. But I'm a firm believer in cribs and bassinets during the night time. Good luck!

  • As always I LOVE your advice! Will definitely try swaddling and crib at night. I have a cosleeper he can sleep in during the day in the living room so he keeps getting used to sleeping flat. Does Addy sleep okay flat with her reflux? I did elevate Samuel's mattress in hopes that would help him.

  • I don't know if this is the right thing to do, but because DS had liked the incline of the RnP, we bought a crib wedge that goes on top of the mattress and under the sheet. We used it for a few months. DD is still in RnP.

  • I tried that and tried propping his feet up to give the allusion he was in a seat. I might try it again at night. he sleeps longer at night than during the day.

    Aw thanks!

Addy has never had a problem sleeping flat with her reflux. Daxton never did, either, though. It only bothers(ed) them when they ate, screaming while they ate, etc. Have you tried him in the cosleeper during the day at all? Or have you tried the cosleeper next to your bed? That might be an easier transition, first. However, personally, I'd go straight to the crib, if I were you. If Daxton and Addy weren't sharing a room, she would have been in the crib the first night she came home. Even though she's had four nights of STTN, she still has more nights she gets up once so I won't put her in there til she's more consistent. Anyways, that's not what you asked.

Do you ever notice if he is bothered by sleeping flat with his reflux? Have you let him play on a play mat and does he ever fall asleep on there? Addy falls asleep all.the.time on hers. Maybe that could train him in small amounts of time to sleep flat. She only sleeps for, at the most, a half hour at a time on the mat.

  • My problem is that I've tried so many different things I can't tell what really works. He sleeps better in a seat like the RnP and not flat on his back. During the day I can get him to sleep in a PnP and cosleeper. I think consistency is key and I'm not doing that. I will do what I did last week and put the evil RnP away and do the cosleeper. Crossing my fingers he will sleep better before I go back to work in 2 weeks.

  • Right. I think if you just stick to one thing it's better for for of you. Good luck.
