LO fussing in the carrier??

We have a k'tan and an ergo. LO was fine in the k'tan the first time we tried it but every time since then, he freaks out every time I put him in it. He won't settle down against my chest and keeps pushing away from me. I even watched the instruction video again to make sure I was using it right. LO is only 5 weeks old.

He's better in the ergo but its so bulky that I don't find it easy to wear around the house.

Any advice? Should I try another type of wrap? TIA!!

Re: LO fussing in the carrier??

  • My son was and still occassionally is the same way. He's 6 months old now and can tolerate the carrier for longer periods but its still just not his thing. What worked for me was building up to longer and longer periods of time each day...maybe 5 mins here and then 20 mins there and always putting him in when he's at is calmest so he doesnt start negative associations with it...also I gave him his binky to suck on while he was in and sang a little and that would keep him settled long enough to start to get used to it. Its frustrating at first but easing him in and just giving it time and patience is the best advice I can give.  HTH:)

  • Which position are you using with the k'tan?  If you aren't already, I'd do the legs out tummy to tummy carry.

It's not uncommon for babies to fuss when they are first worn, particularly if they are tired.  Movement is key!!  Have you tried going for a walk, bouncing on the exercise ball or even doing something with white noise like vacuuming?  It's a new experience so it may take a bit of time to get him settled and used to what's going on.

  • My LO mostly hates being in the Moby wrap unless I'm moving, and even then he screams for about 5 minutes before he gives up and falls asleep.

  • We have a moby and an ergonomic infantino. With both (though less so with the moby) LO will often fuss when first put into her carrier. She can sometimes be fussy for 5-10 minutes, especially if she's gassy or overly tired. The pacifier will often help with this issue. However, even without the paci she will eventually calm down and sleep peacefully. As others have said, movement helps. Also gently patting her butt and talking to her or making soothing sounds also helps.
