Pacifier question

The only pacifier Evie would take is the Soothie, but she doesn't hold in her mouth very well. She's getting better, but it's basically suck-suck-suck-drop. And then she has a mini-spaz because she wants it but it's not in her mouth.

I had tried the Avent pacifiers, but it was nothin' doin'.

Is there something out there, jellyish like the Soothie, that is easier for babies to hold in their mouth? With all this SIDS talk here lately, and us beginning to transition her to her crib, I'd feel better if she could have something that didn't fall out of her mouth pretty much instantly.

Suggestions/thoughts?

Re: Pacifier question

  • My DS was like that with soothies at first..I got some pacifiers from Kmart..I'm sure they are elsewhere too but they are called gumdrop pacifiers the brand is the first years..he did so much better.

  • Mine has done well with the MAM's from Target. He hated all the other brands that we tried.

  • Addy likes the MAMS, DS used to like the Avents which both basically have the same nipple but Addy won't take the Avents. I think because they don't "frame" her mouth like the MAMS do. Little weirdo. DS never liked the Nuks, either. I haven't tried anything else with Addy. I'm keeping what works, but go to the store and buy a couple different kids. She might like something you wouldn't even think she would. The Nuks are completely different than a soother, maybe she'll like that better.

  • Our little guy was just like Evie - he seemed to like the Soothies, but couldn't keep them in his mouth (which would result in a mini spaz like you described).

I decided I was going to try different pacifiers until I found one that worked. The first brand I tried after the Soothies was Nuk and he loves them!  Of course, they still fall out of his mouth from time to time, but for the most part, he is able to keep them in his mouth for quite a long time.  They worked great, so I ended up not having to buy any other brands.

  • DS likes the Gerber First Essentials Soft Center Latex Pacifiers.  We had a couple of 6+ month ones because one of our former foster children used them.  Since DS sometimes gagged on the bigger ones, I searched to see if there was a 0+ month version.  After checking several stores, I finally found some at a Walmart.  (I checked a couple of different Walmarts before I found them.)

  • You know, I've never set foot inside a Target before. There's just never been one near where I lived :p

I'll buy an assortment and see what works, I guess. Thanks :)

  • The LC I've been seeing said Paula just needs to learn how to keep it in, that it involves a certain kind of suck that she'll get the hang of eventually. But we have the same issue with Gumdrop pacifiers, the actual Gumdrop brand, not the similar ones made by another brand. I believe it's the same style of "nipple" as a soothie, one where their lips have to kind of flare out.
