Baby Showers

Asking MIL to host?

Hi everyone, I'm expecting in March and starting to think about a shower. I live about 5 hours from where I grew up and I would rather just have one shower, here, where I live with my husband. I mentioned this to my mom and she honestly seemed relieved - and agreed.

Now, my MIL lives close and she would be the next logical person to throw one - but she's not the type to ever ask me. Although she'd do a great job.

I really get a lot of heartburn asking anyone to throw me a baby shower, but my husband insists that she would love to do it and would simply just need me to ask. I just don't want to seem rude or entitled.

What do you think? Is there a hard and fast rule that you don't ask for your own shower or should I take my husband's advice since he knows her so well?

  • You don't ask for your own shower. It's a gift that is given to you. Think of it this way. Would you walk up to someone and say "this is what I want for my birthday." without them asking you first what you'd like? Probably not, right? It's inappropriate for you to ask anyone to throw you a shower.

  • Yea that's what I thought. I wouldn't feel right asking.

  • Sorry, I'm never a fan of asking someone to host a party for you.  Either they want to or not.

He's the single greatest thing I've done in my life and reminds me daily of how fun (and funny) life can be.  He's turned out pretty swell for having such a heartless and evil mother.
  • This is good advice. I'm just going to let it go unless and until someone offers. Thank you for the gut check everyone!
