Is it another growth spurt or just some kind of crazy phenomenon?? LO is about 4 months now and last night he was up 3 times (he's usually up just once or sometimes STTN)...
do they need to eat or can you just try to soothe back to sleep? Just trying to prepare myself for what could be a few more nights of this...
Re: What is the 4 month wakeful anyway???
Ok- also, I just tried to add a pic to my siggy (which i've never done before) and i used tinypic.com... when i look at it, it's huge!! Is it huge for everyone else or is it normal sized?? what did i do wrong?
*EDIT* Nevermind, I figured it out
The initial answer to your question is 'evil'
But seriously, it supposedly has something to do with one of a few reasons (although they're all guesses, really) - part of it has to do with the fact that our LOs' senses are really kicking in now and they're becoming much more alert and capable. That means that they're not eating as well as they should be during the day because they keep getting distracted or want to interact all the time. Instead, they make up for it at night by constantly waking up hungry. In this case, it's best to feed them because they truly do want to eat.
The other thing is that their sleeping patterns start to change and become more adult-like, which means that they spend less time in REM sleep and it becomes harder for them to slip into it. So basically they're lighter sleepers and often wake up because they haven't learned to transition between cycles yet. Also, because they're all alert now, some babies wake up and want to hang out instead of going back to sleep.
When DD went through the wakeful she would wake up about every 1 1/2 hours and it was really tough. We just had to ride it out and I THINK (although I'm probably jinxing it) that she's finally gotten through it a few weeks later... Good luck! I will say that if her issues had gone on for a month, I probably would've looked into some sort of sleep training.
good to know- thank you!
I guess he has been getting more distracted during daytime feedings now that you mention it... well here's hoping this doesn't last too long
thanks for your response and I hope the "evilness" has fully ended for you!
I never heard of it either but my LO will be 4 months old on Saturday and I have noticed he is waking up more lately..
He never STTN but he would wake to eat and go right back to sleep. Now he wakes up randomly even when he's not hungry and it's hard to get him back to sleep.
Hopefully it will get better soon. The last couple of days I have been exhausted because of this.
Thanks
and same for you!
