Natural Birth

requesting medical records

Has anyone requested the medical records from their birth?  Did you find it helpful?

I was thinking about it because I would like to know how much pitocin I was given, but I wasn't sure if that would even be recorded or if it would just say that they ordered that IV.

Re: requesting medical records

  • I did. I got both the records from my doctor as well as the hospital records. My doctors' notes were scanty, but the hospital records also included things from the nurses and specific details on certain things.

  • It wouldn't hurt. The records from my first birth are pretty detailed, they updated my status probably every 1-2 hours. I didn't have any Pitocin, but I'd imagine that it would list how much you were given.

  • How do you go about getting this?  Just contact hospital and doctor's office with the request?

Go through medical records at the hospital. They will have your whole chart, including nurses's notes, doctor's notes, and med administration record.

  • Huh.  I never even thought of doing this.  I would be interesting to see what they had to say.

  • This is an interesting idea.  I tore and my OB just told me it was a second degree tear but he never went into the details like where it was and how many stitches.   I would be interested to know these details about my birth.
  • I ordered mine. It was kind of a pain, but I'm glad I did just to have it.  It didn't really say a whole lot though that I didn't already know, so it was a little anticlimactic (I had a straightforward med free birth). I had to go in person to the medical records office at the hospital and fill out a request form and pay a fee per page for copies.  I could tell they don't often receive requests from the actual patient, seems like most of the time it's some entity requesting records on behalf of the patient.
