How many ear infections before seeing a specialist?

DS is 3.5.  He had 4 ear infections last year and has one right now.  His seem to be hard to treat and take some time to totally clear up.  His Pedi recommended taking him to a pediatric EENT.  I know kids who have had tons more ear infections than him and have not been referred to a specialist.  What has been your experience?

  • I think my DD was on her 5th after switching meds.  She had tubes put in when she was 1.5 and the infections slowed.

  • It is not just the number of ear infections but the number of infections within a few months of each other that my ped goes by.  My younger DD had tubes put in when she was 18 months.  She had at least 4 infections (and all of those took more than 1 round of meds to clear up) within 3-4 months (sorry I don't recall the exact details, its been a long time).  She had most of them in the winter and we had her surgery that spring or early summer.  She went from when she had her surgery at 18 months to last Thanksgiving so 3 1/2 years old, without another infection and at that time, one of her tubes was out and the other was still in - the one that was in was the one that had the infection - go figure.  She has been totally fine since the last infection 11 months ago.

  • Roughly 6 in 6 months.  However, they would have sent Mia to the ENT after 5 because they weren't responding to antibiotics well anymore, but we waited to see if she got better in the spring.  WRONG.  I love tubes.  DS had them and it changed his little life.  DD has done so well too.  Basically, if they have fluid that isn't draining, it is like an infection waiting to happen.

  • I think sometimes they take into account how difficult it is to fight the infection, length of treatment, potential hearing loss, age etc. It isn't always a hard and fast rule about a certain number of infections.

DD started getting ear infections at 3 months of age, and was referred quite quickly because she was so young.

If I were you, I'd see the specialist and just see what their recommendations are. They usually test for hearing and ear pressure as well, which is helpful.
