Have you changed your fashion style?

Before LO I wore lots of shorts and tanks (live in warm climate) and beach wear. I wore a lot of sun dresses etc when I'm not at work...I'm back to pp weight, but feel like I should be dressing a little more "mommy like"..So I'm looking for a new wardrobe...

Anyone else changing their style after baby?

Re: Have you changed your fashion style?

  • I was very fashion conscious. Everything had to match well and a lot of my shirts had embellishment on it. I'm pretty much back to my pp weight but still have a little belly, so I'm not longer wearing my fitted shirts. I love button down shirts now, I didn't like them before. I also don't care about accessories much. I rarely wear necklaces and bracelets anymore because DD will grab it or it will scratch her. My goal now is to just get dressed, look put together, and leave before I have to change DD's diaper again :-)

  • I agree with a lot of what the PP said.  The number on the scale says I've lost my baby weight but unfortunately everything looks and fits a lot different still.  I don't see any reason to need to look more like a mom though.  Honestly, who wants to look like a mom?!  :)  That phrase brings "mom jeans" and other fashion no nos to mind.  lol  I am right now more trying to figure out what is most flattering to my body and will make me feel good about myself and the way I look.  Clothes are still very frustrating to me right now.

  • I haven't, but sometimes I think that I should probably retire my 2 Wall-E tshirts now that I have a kid... It might sound silly, but I really love them!

  • I wasn't super fashion conscious before, but I did like to look nice. I am fitting back into all my bottoms (except my super skinny jeans that I had to hold my breath to get into pre-preg), but my bigger boobs are posing more of a problem. Now the main thing I look for in an outfit is, Can I nurse him in this easily?

All summer I wore shorts with stretchy tank tops or T shirts. Now that it's colder I've swapped shorts for jeans and added a cardigan but I need to get out my actual winter clothes soon and see what will work. I have lots of sweaters that I love for winter that I didn't get to wear much last year, so I hope to be able to wear them this winter.

  • Style? What is that? Nothing fits me. I spend most of my time in yoga pants and nursing tops. I used to be a size zero and now I barely fit on size 2 pants and I have muffin tops and a c/s pouch... ugh!

  • I still buy clothes that I would've bought pre pregnancy because I love shopping and I wear these clothes to work too. Now it's just a matter of finding pants that fit because my hips grew wider and shirts that don't show my pooch. I used to be a size 0 in pants but am probably a 2 now. I'm not planning to buy new work pants if anything I will wear my old pants with the band if it won't zip. But overall I don't think I changed my fashion at all.
  • My style has changed for sure. I used to dress kind trendy or even a little edgy. Like I'd wear purposely threadbare shirts, still tastefully, but I wouldn't wear anything like that now. When it's been cooler, I've been wearing skinny jeans, in a new size, boots, and oversized sweaters. Like a PP mentioned, everything I wear has to be something I can nurse in easily so there were a lot of nice things I had that I can't wear because it makes nursing too hard, or my now larger breasts can't fit into them.

I plan on extended BF, so it's worth the investment in new tops. While I've been out shopping, I have had a few, "Can a mom wear this?" Moments or as I walked into a younger store, "Can a mom shop here?" Thoughts.

It's funny because my friend and I were joking about BIL's girlfriend, that I really don't care for. My friend said something sarcastic about her like, "oh come on, she's trendy, though!" And she really isn't, but she likes to tell people she is. When my friend said that, I replied, "I don't need trendy friends anymore, I'm a mom now, the antithesis of trendy!" Of course I was joking, I don't think you have to become a bob haircut, mom jean and sweater set wearing mom, but there's definitely been a shift!

  • My look has changed but mostly because I am nursing.  I used to wear a lot of dresses to work and these aren't really conducive to pumping at work (picture me in the teacher's lounge, in an old shower stall, trying to strip half naked-- no thanks!)

I am only 2 lbs over my pp weight (although I was never a size 0 or 2-- who are you people?!???  Super Models Anonymous?) and things are mostly fitting OK (though my butt still gives J Lo a run for her money) besides my giant boobs.  I find that pants that are not quite as tight in the waist help with the muffin top issue.  For me, flowy/looser tops make me look bigger.  Basically I have been sticking with jeans or skirts (or let's be honest, pajama pants), nursing tanks and cardigans.

It's kind of a bummer because I was so looking forward to getting back into all my cute stuff but nursing has curbed that... for now...

Don't retire your Wall-E t-shirts! If anything, I find they're even more appropriate now. You hang out with a kid all day, it's okay to wear something your LO will apreciate (eventually). Big Smile I certainly won't stop wearing my Mickey and Minnie Mouse shirts. Wink

Yeah, I'm kinda thinking that they're probably gonna stick around after all :) I also have an Oscar the Grouch one... :p

  • Figuring out my clothes now has been a dilemma for me. I am a SAHM this year, so I feel very guilty about spending money on clothes. So far I did have to buy 3 new bras, a new pair of jeans (yes, a size 8...no supermodel sizes here), and I splurged on a lightweight sweater since it was on sale and I had an additional discount. Other than that, I am stuck with whatever fits from PP, which honestly was way more conservative and mom-ish than stylish and professional since I taught K-2nd grade and was constantly getting in the floor, running around at PE, potty-training, helping with messy lunches, and generally getting dirty. Now since DS spits up on me so much, I am usually in t-shirts and exercise pants b/c I know I will have to change at least 3 times most days. I would love to find some sort of cutesy style, but right now that's so far down on the totem pole for me it's a little bit depressing.

  • Last week I actually tried on every single piece of clothing that I own to see what fits and what doesn't.  I ended up getting rid of an entire trash bag full of clothes that either would never fit me again or "wouldn't be appropriate for a mom to wear" (in my mind anyway).  I still had a bunch of clothes from my early 20's that would not be appropriate for a 30 something mom to wear - super short skirts, dresses, tops that showed a little too much skin, etc.  I was happy to discover that I'm back to my old size 2 jeans, but finally accepted the fact that my size 0 slacks will probably never fit again (they were getting too tight pre-pregnancy anyway).  Bottom line - I used it as an excuse to go shopping.  And yes, my style has definitely changed in the "can I nurse and/or pump in this" thought process.

  • I'm pretty sure I was never a size 0.  Y'all are nuts. ;) But I can ALMOST fit into my old jeans.  I'm about 5 lbs off my PP weight but it's distributed differently now.  I honestly was never very stylish.  I'd try but, I don't invest a lot in expensive or nice clothes.  I will say I'm glad it's getting colder... sweater season!  But I'd say I mostly dress for comfort/nursing now.

  • I'm so torn on this... I feel way too young to be changing my wardrobe because I'm a mom, but I'm also finding that I just don't care as much about wearing clothes that others might find attractive. I just want to look nice for myself and for DH, and that's pretty much it. Although I definitely have some clothes that I'd like to wear, but aren't practical for nursing. DH and I want to have 4 kids, and I plan on extended breastfeeding, so anything that isn't practical for nursing is starting to look impractical EVER.

  • Nope. I'll always be a jeans and t shirt girl. ;) I would love to get more stylish but I don't see it happening.
