Jumperoo/Exersaucer Question

I'm curious if any of you ladies have started using something like this with any of your little ones. I was under the impression that they shouldn't be putting weight on their feet for awhile still....if you are using it do you have it set up so that they can't really reach the floor?

Re: Jumperoo/Exersaucer Question

  • Why shouldn't they put weight on their feet?  Owen was practically born putting weight on his feet.  He was big and pretty strong from the start and has always loved to be held standing in our laps.  I would actually think it would be worse for them to be dangling in there without putting their feet down.  Our exersaucer lowers enough that I can put O in there with his feet touching.  When DS1 it didn't and I just put a pillow or something underneath for him to stand on until he got tall enough to reach.  We just started using the exersaucer this week.  He loves it and it keeps him occupied for a good 20 minutes so I can make dinner or get something done.

I don't know what gave me the idea that they shouldn't be putting weight on their feet..I honestly thought it would be worse with their feet just dangling too. I think maybe the idea of no walkers for little ones gave me that impression....

Gotcha. Just never heard of that before. I was reading again recently about not using walkers though so I think you're right on that one. I teach Pre-K and had to do some online classes related to daycare stuff and all ages.  There was info about babies and they said no to walkers on it.  It said something about them getting a false sense of balance when they use them and it not helping them learn to walk correctly.  I think those little push toys are better for that reason.  I think one of the big pushes away from walkers was also that babies were going down the stairs in them.  The reason I thought about the dangling being bad was because of how people on here (and on baby wearing websites) always talk about "crotch danglers" in certain carriers.  lol  Who knows!

  • Not sure. personally, I had him in the jolly jumper at 2 months and we don't have an exersaucer but I wouldv'e put him in then too. It's probably fine!
  • Walkers are actually illegal here in Canada, and I think the main reason was because of babies falling down stairs and such. We got an exersaucer for Ds last week and so far he loves it. His feet barely touch the ground on the lowest setting, but he has liked to 'stand' since he was about 2 weeks old. He doesn't spend more than about 10 minutes at a time in it, but the toys fascinate him.

  • We have a jumperoo that we haven't used yet...I thought that LO had to be able to sit unassisted before we could use it. Anyway, I'm eager to get it out for him to use it.
  • We have a jumperoo and started using it when DD1 was 4 months. We will probably start using it with DD2 when she is 4 months as well

  • I was just trying to goggle when my son would be old enough for these. I was happy to see the answer to my question on The Bump!

  • We have the jumperoo and I have used it at 3 months with all of them. They all had good head/neck control by then so it as fine to use.

  • we've been using both for about a month now- LO has constantly wanted to be standing since he was born.  I usually do stuff a pillow or blanket in the excersaucer with him though so he doesn't flop around.  He is pretty good about staying upright, but one time I didn't have the pillow and he flung himself forward and bumped his head :(
  • We are going to buy a jumperoo or exersaucer and start using it next week. I think he will really like it!

I read in baby 411 that they shouldn't use it for more than 10 or 15 minutes at a time because there us some research that suggests spending too much time upright but not being able to see your feet can cause walking delays. I'm sure you would have to put your baby in there for a ridiculous amount of time for that to happen, but I'm just throwing it out there since I read it last night!

  • We bought one for her last week and she loves it.  She can hold her head up just fine.  I didn't want a walker one b/c we have a small house and she really wouldn't be able to move around that much anyway so we went with a jumperoo.
  • We have been putting LO in the exersaucer for the past month or so because he has found an interest in being upright. His feet can't completely touch the bottom yet.

  • You ladies inspired me-- I just picked up a Fisher Price Rainforest Jumperoo on Craigslist for $35!  DD was happy as a clam this morning!  Although- her feet don't quite reach the floor on the lowest setting, so we put a book on the floor to give her a boost :)

  • I've just got my LO a fisher price jumperoo but he is terrified of it! The first time I put him in the jumperoo he looked happy watching the toys around him but when it started bouncing he screamed and cried. The same thing happens the second time i put him in and I've put the jumperoo away thereafter. I guess he feels insecure in it and it makes me wanna cry too watching him so terrified. : but I hope one day he will learn to enjoy his jumperoo like how the other babies do.
