swinging by arms

DH has been playing with DD and holding her hands tight and with her arms up swinging her around. not incredibly fast or crazy. She loves it. but I worry about this being harmful to her arms, elbows.. Do you think this is bad and should stop?

Re: swinging by arms

  • I think it's fine.  DD loves holding my and DH's hands and then we swing her up.  She loves it.

  • DH does this too, and I must admit I have been concerned. But I am probably just being overly cautious (and he still does it, and she still loves it) so I wouldn't worry too much. I am curious to hear what others think too!
  • Yea I just don't like this. My sister tried to swing her around like that and I asked her to stop. She got peeved and went on about how she's done it with all her nieces and nephews etc, but I just don't like it. It just seems like it would be so easy to dislocate a shoulder (or hip when you pick them up by their feet like that) I'd just rather not take the chance.

  • When I was about a year old my big brother (who was 19 at the time) was swinging me by my arms and popped my shoulder out of its socket.  Everyone says he was just barely swinging me, but the weight of my body and the angle that my shoulder was at were the perfect combo.  I then popped the same shoulder out of socket in junior high on the monkey bars.  That $h!t HUUUUURT!!!  I still have pain in it like an old woman when the weather changes.

Needless to say, we don't do that in our house.

  • We don't do that either.  I don't even like when dh takes him out of the carseat by his arms.  I always pick him up under the armpits

Basically says why you shouldn't do it for reasons everyone has mentioned here.

But I agree, and have always heard not to do it especially with really young kids.

  • I wouldn't do it. I have known 5 people who have injured their LO like this. A few of them had to be questioned by CPS. Not worth the risk, IMO.

  • My dad used to do this to my brother when we were younger and once in the middle of the grocery store, he dislocated my brothers elbow (Nurse's Elbow). Yeah, I haven't been able to forget that one. That has scared me enough to cringe a bit when I see it.

The same thing happened to my niece. I think she was older than our babies... Maybe 3-4 iirc.

  • I cringe when I see this. I don't judge at all. but it just makes me nervous to watch.

  • I am def rethinking this after reading the posts.  We don't do it often, usually if we are walking we will grab her hands and swing her up over the curb.

  • You really shouldn't do this. It is very very easy for little kids elbows to get dislocated and picking up/swinging from arms is the number one way this happens. If it gets dislocated, you are looking at a trip to the ER to get it popped back into place.

Oh, you'll also be looking at a major mommy guilt trip.

Take my word on this one. :/
