How old...

How old do plan on your little one being before you go out of the house? I am asking this group because when we have our babies it will be winter/cold and flu season! EKK!

I am worried about getting the baby blues and thinking that it might be worse because I have been on BR since I was 28 weeks..that is A LOT of time stuck in the house!! I would never do anything to jeopardize my baby's health and well being, just wondering what others are thinking about this topic.

Re: How old...

  • I have a 3.5 year old so I don't expect to be sitting around very long. He's signed up for a few classes at our Y which is very quiet during the day and I just sit outside the class and wait.
So to answer your question prob a week or 2....but it won't be like I will be hitting up the mall at rush hour!!

  • I plan on being home or at my parents' house the first two weeks or so.  After that, I'll wear her when we go out to help keep people's hands off of her.  I'll keep it light for the first six weeks or so though (church, preschool, grocery store, playdates).

  • My pediatrician said that my LO will have his first appointment 2-3 days after we come home from the hospital.  Then again at 10 days to 2 weeks old.  I plan on staying pretty low-key during those two-ish weeks, but then we're driving 7.5 hours to spend the holidays with family for 3 weeks.  So we'll be out of the house for that time, unless there are unforeseen circumstances that blow my plan out of the water!

  • I don't plan to stay in for too long, as long as I'm feeling up to it physically we'll try to keep our routine with DD (preschool, activities, etc.) and I'm planning to start going to my local mom's group meetings as soon as I can. Getting out of the house as much as possible was what kept me sane the last time. I'll either keep the baby in her carseat with a blanket over it or I'll wear her so I'm not too worried about germs.

    Yes THIS.

Although it will be the holiday season and places are going to be crazy busy, it won't stop me from going out. I don't see anything wrong with exposure to people/places- helps build there immune systems IMO. I really don't worry about it much

  • You know I really didn't think it was a big deal to take the baby out every now and then as long as they were covered and no one touched them, but then I had a baby in Dec. 2010 and he went to the hospital for RSV the day he turned 3 months old. It was horrible, and I think I may just be more careful this time around.

That being said, the baby blues are so real and strong. Even if you don't take baby, try to go out by yourself sometimes. Also, a friend told me that the way you hold your baby may be contributing to baby blues. She says holding your baby and constantly looking down can cause baby blues because your head is down so much.

  • Our pediatrician told us to try to keep her in for the first month because a fever in the first month can be lethal.  He said that he'd like to tell every parent to keep their child home until they get their two month shots, but he knows that isn't pratical for many parents, so just not to take her out unnecessarily and to try not to let people handle her.  He also said he doesn't think that making people use hand sanitizer before touching her will make a difference (when I asked), but that having people wash their hands couldn't hurt.  He said that he isn't quite as "strict" on the parents of summer babies.

I will try to follow his advice as much as possible.  I plan to leave baby at home for a month, with very few exceptions.  But if I need to go out, then I will have my hubby keep her.  It will be good daddy/daughter bonding time.

I don't know that what the pediatrician said applies to going for walks though.  I need to ask him that.  I'd really like to be able to put the baby in the stroller and go for a walk.  I think his main concern is people touching/holding the baby.  It probably cuts down a lot of risk if you are wearing the baby so others can't ask to hold her or get in her face.

  • We plan on lying low until the first few rounds of vaccines.

  • In all honesty, we went out the day after we came home from the hospital.  The only reason we did was because I was so engorged from DS not latching that I needed a pump to relieve the pressure.  We did go grocery shopping the next week though.  We just kept him in his carseat and stroller (Chicco travel system) with a blanket over him.

  • I'll probably be going out within a few days - otherwise I'll get stir crazy.  I know I'll be attending breastfeeding groups and some other mommy groups just so I can keep my sanity.  But, I'll most likely be wearing him in the Moby and limiting his contact with others.  Plus, most of our friends are pretty respectful in not requesting to hold a baby when they're sick.

  • Thanks ladies!!

It is nice to see both sides of the coin on this. I will def talk to the pediatrician and get his input. I hope to be able to take walks and get out some. I do think it will help with baby blues, I am concerned about that...I get winter blues as it is!

  • DS was about a week old... born April 5, a Monday morning, and we went to church the next Sunday.

DD1 was 3 days old... born September 3, a Friday morning, and we went to evening service at our church the day I was released from the hospital.

DD2 is due the Wednesday after Thanksgiving, but I imagine we'll go out fairly soon after her birth... depending on when she is actually born, and when I am released from the hospital, and what events we have planned. I don't think I'd do evening service again, if I'm released on a Sunday, just because I felt so rushed last time... and I don't like to be rushed. But definitely within the week, as we're definitely going to church with her.

And we alternate Thanksgiving and Christmas with my inlaws, 4 hours drive away. Thankfully this is our year for Christmas, and we'll be visiting them within the month, too.
  • We'll take him to places other than the pedi or to friends and family when he's one month old adjusted. As a preemie, we're being cautious. We did this with ds1 also and he was early too.

When we do go out, I plan on Bsby wearing like I did with ds1. People feel uncomfortable reaching into your chest to touch a bAby so you get fewer germy people touching your baby.

  • We won't be home long. We didn't stay in with DD either for more than a few days after we got home. My best friend is driving up a few days after my due date and my nephews birthday is the day after they arrive so we'll be taking a trip to Chucke Cheese. Yay :/  I have to get out of the house or I tend to go a little stir crazy.

All of this.  We will try to keep DS on his schedule as best as possible, and I hate being inside for too long.
