1st Trimester

Allergy meds

Did anyone else continue taking zyrtek and/or singulair while pregnant?  My allergist said it would be best to wean myself from one or both before getting pregnant, but when I tried to stop one of them a while ago I felt like crap.

Re: Allergy meds

  • I've been taking Claritin. It's category B. I don't need it anymore but there would be no way I could see or think without something.

  • Singulair is safe according to my Dr.. I don't know why your allergist would want you weaned off of it. (If I read your post correctly.) I take Zyrtec D and he didn't say anything about it. I didn't flat out bring it up though. Does anyone know? I am pretty sure just plain Zyrtec is okay, but not sure about the D (plus decongestant) version.

  • My allergy doctor said I could continue my Zyrtec, but he would advise against taking Zyrtec D while pregnant. I also take the off brand version of Nazonex. My OB last time said both were okay, if I could handle going off them to do it but if not keep going.  Honestly I can't breathe without my allergy meds and it's obviously better for baby to have oxygen. Definitely talk to your doctor about specific medications if you have concerns.
  • Never heard of that recommendation and thank God I didn't because I would have been even more miserable during pregnancy.

I have heard some ladies say their doctor said if you BF it may cause issues with supply and to stop during BFing but I think that's still up for debate.

I took Singulair throughout my last pregnancy and am still taking it now.  My doctor said that benefits greatly outweigh any risks.  I was taking it when I BF'd DD for 13 months.   I was just told to avoid certain allergy meds (usually the stuff with the "D" at the end of the name like Mucinex D).  With BFing, you want to avoid antihistamines and the D stuff because it can dry you up and it goes through the BM.

  • I take Reactine and I've been told by my allergist and this mother help line called "Mother Risk".
Both confirmed there was no know birth defects or abnormalities known to be caused by Reactine.

I don't know if you are in Canada, or if you can call from the U.S but look up Mother Risk. You can call and ask about any drug you want and they can advise you if it's safe :
  • My Dr. said both was fine...

My OB specifically said Zyrtec is okay but to stay away from Zyrtec-D. I miss it. Badly.

Did they say specifically why you couldn't take Zyrtec D? (I'm a little nervous now!) I have asthma and it really helps to control it. Just the regular Zyrtec doesn't do anything for me, I might as well not take it. Maybe he didn't tell me to not take it because having my asthma better controlled is worth the risks? I don't take it a lot. Maybe a couple times a week, when my allergies are bad or my asthma is acting up.

  • My Dr also suggested not taking anything during the 1st tri but that's his opinion.
