Help - Hoping for Help Making Decision

Hi Ladies,

My husband and I recently moved across the country for his job. Over the past two months I have had a few job offers but nothing that sounded too exciting. This week I was offered two different positions - both good in some ways and bad in others. I am having a really hard time deciding between the two and am hoping for anyone to shed some light into which they would recommend.

Job A: Small company, three employees locally - benefits are not great but the pay is excellent. There is no room for advancement but the position is exactly what I am looking for.

Job B: Largest company in the area with over 1,000 employees. Benefits are great but pay is horrible - I am talking about half of the other job. The manager and HR person have both indicated that this is very entry level and that the only way to be at a higher level is to start in this position. Some people are in it for  a few months and others are in it for years before being promoted. According to these individuals (and the five people who I have interviewed with) promotions and movement in the company is very regular. The initial position is way below (both skill and money) what I was hoping for but with the promise of potential promotion it could be promising.

So, would you chose a job with a great company with a potential good job down the road or a job for the position with nowhere to go?

As a side note, the money is a big deal it takes years to get promoted but if under six months we could do it.

Thank you for any helpful discussions in this decision making time. For the past few months I have been so stressed out that I wouldn't find a good situation but now I have two! I am very lucky, but I do need help.

Re: Help - Hoping for Help Making Decision

  • Personally, I'd take the one that is exactly what you are looking for with great pay. I wouldn't want to be stressing about moving up and when and how while living on a paycheck I couldn't sustain for more than six months. That sounds like a lot of stress. I also tend to like smaller companies in general though too.

I think if you take the entry level job and say you get stuck there for two years and decide you cant take it anymore and then try to leave, you are going to be looking for a new job with only that entry level one on your resume for the last two years. If you take the one that's exactly what you want with good pay and want to move up in two years, you would be looking for a job that is one step up and would have the experience and pay scale to prove you are worth it.

Unless they are promising that you will move up at a certain time frame, or you have some other reason to really want to be in the big company, then I would go with the smaller one. Did they give specifics on what job you would have the opportunity to move into? I've had friends at big companies be given promotions they didn't want to other departments etc. and the company calls that upward movement, but it's not in their specific desired career track, so it's tough to say no, but still move up and stay in the company KWIM?

  • I'd do A b/c it seems like it will make you happier & also, is it not possible that the local experience, connections & pay could set you up for a better position at company B down the road? (or would you feel like turning this down would be burning that bridge)
  • A seems to be exactly what you want now, and B has the potential to maybe be what you want, in a few years.  Unless I'm reading wrong, A sounds like the right choice for you.

  • I'd go with A.

I hate companies that say that you'll get promoted, but can't tell you how long. In my experience, it usually is much longer than what they tell you at the beginning.

I'd work at A for a while and then see if that experience can get you in a B or even somewhere else.

  • Thank you all for your input! I have decided to go with A as suggested by all of you. Like I have said, it is a wonderful dilemma to be in but it is still hard. If I had received an offer from either independently I would have taken that job so given the opportunity to decide has been difficult. I am hoping to be able to walk away from Company B without that bridge burned - the only issue with that is if I ever want to go back this is where I will have to start anyway. Thank you again for all of your comments and support. I appreciated hearing different view points.
