Do bedsharing toddlers ever SELF nightwean?

If so, does it ever happen organically without coaxing?   We're down to just one nursing session during the day, but DS still nurses a ton at night.  Not only is it frustrating because we are TTC but also b/c we are so tired from the interrupted sleep!

We did start the Jay Gordon method a little over a month ago and saw some progress after just a few days, but then everything went to crap (I'm still not sure why).  Anyways, we're going to start this method up again, but I'm wondering if toddlers ever nightwean on their own while bedsharing.   Also, does this occur around a particular age?

TIA!

  • DS didn't completely self night wean, I used a combination of soothing and tools like the Nursies book. He was "ready" though, but he was closer to 2.

  • DS1 night-weaned somewhere at 14-16 months and completely self-weaned at 18 months. Once he was primarily on solids (after age 1), we did do some gentle holding off at those times he wanted to nurse 2 hours or sooner at night (but if he got hysterical, I would nurse him).

  • Mine didn't. I night weaned both. DD1 was 26 months; DD2 was 25 months. I read Jay Gordon but didn't follow the method exactly. Neither girl usually woke before that window, so essentially I ended up weaning cold turkey. I would just tell them that they could nurse in the morning when the sun came up. Once I decided to night wean, I never gave in and nursed at night again. They weren't happy but eventually cuddled up next to me and went back to sleep.
