Working Moms

Question for those with school age children.

What do you do if you have to be in work before the time school starts? Also, what do you do anout picking up your child after school?

I am currently looking for a new job but it seems like all the good ones are in the city. This would mean well over an hour commute (so I couldn't take a late lunch to pick my DD up at school). This it a total "cart before the hourse" type senerio since she is only 1.Stick out tongue However,I am not the type of person that likes to jump from company to company so I am hoping to still be there when she goes to school. Do you hire someone to drop off/pick your kid up or do you find an before/afterschool program for them to attend?

Re: Question for those with school age children.

  • I don't have a school age child, but I'm a teacher.  There are many options.  You could have a day care center, that picks up your child in a van/bus (we have a few of those).  We also have on-site "Kids Club" which is specifically for before/after school but it fills quickly.  There is also the option of paying someone to do that for you - I have a few students who have a nanny simply for those times.

  • DS's school has a before and after school program.  We can drop him off as early as 7:30am and pick up no later than 6pm. It costs about $5/hr.  I also know some schools will bus kids from a daycare.  There's a few kids that do that at the DC my DD goes too.

  • Our school offers extended before and after care.
  • Thank ladies ! I will have to check with the school system to see if they offer any before/after school programs.

  • My older son attends a daycare that has a before and after school program.  The school bus picks him and the other kids up at daycare to take them to school, and drops them off there in the afternoon.

  • I have two options for my kids if I need to go to work earlier. One is that the school offers before-school care. The other is that a nearby daycare center offers before-school and after-school care and will take kids to and pick them up from school.

  • DS is not school age yet but he is in Pre-Kindergarten at a school that goes to the 5th grade.  His school has an on-site before and after school care program.
