top of stair gates

so at the top of stairs on one side we have a wall where the banister is bolted into  - directly across from that on the other wall there is no stud. We had numerous problems with a gate we used when DD #1 was a baby..kept coming out of the wall b/c there was no stud to drill into. Does anyone know of a gate where you could kind of create your own instead of just being straight across? Any other suggestions are also appreciated!

    I think Kidco makes a top-of-stairway gate that can be mounted at an angle, instead of straight across.  We bought one of their gates but haven't installed it yet so I can't comment on how well they work. The reviews on Amazon looked good though.

    We have the Kidco top of stairs gate and it can be mounted at an angle.  At first it was hard to get it adjusted just right so that it wasn't a pain to close (needed 2 hands), but it's gotten better and I'm pretty happy with it now.
