A very interesting article. NBR

Last night a friend and I were talking about Christmas coming up and I brought up shopping online.  I love to shop online.  In fact if I see something in the store over $50 I check on Amazon to see if I can buy it cheaper.  It's fast, if there is a problem, returns are easy, if you don't delete the email, you always have a receipt handy.  I love online shopping.  I told him I do a lot of online shopping because if you spend enough you get free shipping so I tend to keep adding things I want to my "shopping cart"  and buy all at once so I get the free shipping.  He made some noises about supporting local businesses and all that and then sent me this:

He did say that Amazon is making changes to make the work place better but they are still in big trouble with human rights groups.

Yikes! I had no idea it was like that. I have a friend who always gives me a hard time about not shopping locally...I suppose she has a point. It's so easy to click and have your order arrive in a couple days at a lower price, but maybe there is a bigger cost to online shopping. Thanks for making me think.

Same here. I have a hard time buying local because we don't really have anything other than Walmart locally...Why in the world are they allowed to operate like this?!? I mean, I get why there are people working there, they need the money, I just don't get why the company is allowed to operate this way.

The part that really got me was the mothers talking to their kids at lunch. What if there was an emergency? This sort of thing should not be happening.

  • I was actually impressed that they were paying them $11+ an hour. Of course they treat they employees like that. Shipping things cost money and the things you buy online have a cost. The less you pay for those things the more the company has to find the money to offer you those deals from other places within the company.

This is the issue I have here. After I got out out of the hospital with DS we drove 190 miles round trip to buy a bassinet for DS since I had changed my mind and wanted him in our room. Since I had a C-section I was waddling through the store at a snail's pace. I always complain to DH that I would shop locally if they had stuff I needed to buy.  In the meantime, some local downtown areas are failing miserably because no one is buying from the Mom and Pop stores. Again, they are not selling things that people need on a day to day basis and, in one particular town's case, the stores are only open while everyone else is at work. I am always wondering how it is that we can have 6+ coffee shops in town and not one single bassinet for sale at a store.
