Breastfeeding

Is this still usable?

I had expressed breast milk that we stored in the refridgerator. We warmed a bottle that got only partially used. Some was left in the bottle she fed from and we had one ounce still in the Medela bottle that was only warmed but not fed on by my daughter.

Question:

Am I able to use the leftover 1 ounce that was taken from the fridge and warmed but never used? I put it back in the fridge just in case. I hate to see it wasted.

Also, I put back the bottle that was partially finished. My daughter was ravenous so we warmed it up but then she took little from it and passed out. Is it usable?

TIA ladies!!

Re: Is this still usable?

  • My general rule was if it smelled okay, it was okay. I would reoffer the partially used bottle first, and the extra oz second. I would try to use them within the next day.

  • I don't like to waste BM either, but I'm extra cautious. I don't reuse after its heated...But I'm not sure if its okay or not.
  • Well I just found the answer to my own question. Kelly mom.com says if a baby doesn't finish all the milk in 1 feeding it is probably safe to refrigerate it and offer it at next feeding time!! So glad I don't have to waste!!

  • Yep that's all still usable.  You can warm BM and then put it back in the fridge and use it again.  You can also use milk from a bottle that she has already eaten from.  Just try to use them up first, I usually make sure to use it the same day or within 24 hours.

  • Can the bottles be mixed? Or do you offer them separate?
