Preemies

How long was your preemie in the hospital?

Our little miracle was born 9/19/12 at 29w5d. He was 2lb 12oz. We were told to count on him being home on his due date11/30/12. He is doing amazing with his feelings. He no longer has his PICC Line or oxygen. They will start working with bottle/breast feeding next Friday. I was just wondering how long your preemie was hospitalized?

Re: How long was your preemie in the hospital?

  • My boys were born at 29w4d in April. They came home on their two month birthday, 12 days before their due date. Some preemies get to go home sooner, some later, but EDD is a good timeframe to expect them home if they're feeder/growers. Congrats!

Exactly this. DS was born 31w, 3 days & also spent 44 days in the NICU. But, all babies are different as PP says, just take one day at a time. Thinking of you & wishing you a speedy trip home.

  • Like everyone else has said, every baby is different.  My DD was born at 25w 0d and spent 124 days in the NICU.  She was off of oxygen around day 90 so we all thought she may be home before her due date but extreme feeding troubles kept her there for another 5 weeks.

No oxygen is great!  I hope your LO continues to do well.

  • My little guy was born 31w 4d and was in the hospital for 25 days.  He came home at 35 weeks exactly.

  • DS was born at 31w5d and stayed for 26 days. Came home at 35w3d But like everyone said every baby is different. My friend had her baby a few weeks later at 34w at the same hospital and she stayed for Ives 3 weeks. She was also heavier at birth than my son was when he left nicu so you never know!!

    And congrats!!!!

  • My twins were born at 28w4d and both came home exactly 10 weeks later at 38w4d.

  • I agree with others... plan on his EDD then you'll be pleasantly surprised if he makes it home earlier. My guy was born at 29w4d last year on 9/10, he came home at 35 wks corrected on 10/18. It was crazy earlier- maybe a little too early. Sounds like your guy is doing great. Congrats!

  • Congratulations on the birth of your baby!

My first was born at 33w 4d and spent 13 days in the NICU and my second was born at 34w 5d and spent 14 days in the NICU. It really all depends on how well they do.

Praying that your little one is home with you soon. Please keep us posted.

  • My 29-weeker was in the NICU for 9 weeks and came home two weeks before his due date. He could have/should have been home at least a week sooner, but the nurses kind of messed up his feeding for a while so he didn't get weaned off the tube until that last week. Best wishes to you and your LO and congratulations!! Once you bring your baby home, these NICU days will seem like a distant memory!

  • my peanut was born at 32 weeks/2 days and spent 24 days in the NICU.  We were told to expect her to come home around her due date, and told all of our friends and family the same.  It was a nice surprise when she was released exactly a month before her due date!  Best of luck to you!! :)

  • My son was born at 33w5d due to unexplained PTL. He was 5lbs 2oz. He came home after 23 days in the NICU at 37w exactly. I think he would have come home a week sooner had he not developed his dairy allergy, that really set us back with the breast/bottle feeding.

  • DD was born at 35w 4 days at 5lbs exactly. She spent 7 days in the NICU. The nurses will always say EDD but if he's already off the oxygen thats an awesome sign! I learned quick to stop asking when she would come home and focus on what she would need to do in order to come home. It was easier to think of the little goals like getting off oxygen, maintaining her temp, eating X amount, ect than to fixate on a certain date.

Oh my other suggestion would be to have them check your car seat soon... we ended up rushing out the night before she came home to get one that would fit her and pass the car seat test.

  • My daughter was born at 29w1d. She spent exactly 8 weeks in the NICU and came home at 37 weeks. They told us to expect her to stay until her due date but we were fortunate that she was ready then. She may have gotten to go home a little earlier, had she taken her feedings better but that was a struggle for her at the end. I remember sitting and watching babies that were younger than her and smaller than her go home and I would just cry. Please try not to compare your LO's NICU experience to another. Each one has their own personal journey through the NICU at their own pace.

  • My son was born on 7/18/12 at 28w 1 day. He was in the NICU until 9/12/11. We stayed 56 days. His due date was 10/11/11, so he came home 1 month before his due date. They say that so that you don't set your expectations so high. Some babies go home before, some stay a little longer.
