How long is a bassinet/pack and play good for?

So we're REALLY going to be tight on space after #2 is born.  We eventually plan on turning our 2 family into a 1 family so we'll have more bedrooms, but until then, we're a full house.

My 6 years old son's room is fairly small and there's no room for another crib in there.  We planned on keeping baby in our room for 3-4 months.  Is it safe to keep a baby in the pack and play / bassinet for that long?  I can't imagine that it's as comfortable as a crib mattress.  And not to mention how small it really is!  I don't think keeping a crib in our room will be an option either :/

Also, do you feel there's a difference with a pack and play vs. a bassinet?

Thanks in advance... I feel like I've forgotten all the "baby stuff" since having my son.

  • A pack & play is good for longer as it's taller. There's also more room for rolling. I think the bassinet would be comfier though. I'd probably go bassinet then if you can't get the extra bedroom before the baby's out of the bassinet switch to a pack n play?

  • I am a FTM so i dont have experience , however, we are not going to be buying a Bassinet and we will be useing our Pack and Play for multi purposes. We plan on useing the Bassinet in our bedroom for LO at first before transfering him to the crib in his room. Also, I plan on useing the pack and play for downstairs when im cooking dinner and cant physically hold him and he can be in that untill i can pick him up. Our friend uses their pack and play for the same reasons and there baby loves it. :)

  • Bassinet = until they can roll

Pack 'n Play = the newborn part is okay until they can roll and then the lower part is fine until they are a toddler.  However, you probably don't want a bigger (over 3/4 months) baby sleeping in a pack n play long term, as it isn't very supportive of their little body/spine. It would be like you camping every single night.  They really need a good supportive mattress.  Placing a crib mattress on the floor would even probably be a better option after the first few months in my opinion.  We actually ended up bedsharing in the end, but we used the pack n play for about six months off and on.

  • What everyone else said and while they don't seem comfortable, I'm not sure they really know the difference that young. My 2 year old slept in a pack n play this summer on vacation and was fine.... This shocked me.

  • DD slept in a bassinet for probably 3 months, then slept in a pack n play until she was 10 or 11 months. We didn't have the room or money for a crib. Our pack n play is an older one and it came with a topper that goes on like a sheet but is like a thin mattress. And a regular pack n play sheet goes on over that. She still has no problem sleeping in it if we go camping or visiting family.
