What's your husband's "passion" and does he do it?

I'm sitting here talking to my silly husband about some science thing and I've realized that he is truly pursuing his passion with his new{ish} job. And it's kinda odd to me, because it's a job! :) Most people have a hobby that is their passion and they don't get near enough time to do it, but I guess I'm wondering if anybody's husband has a job that they are really truly interested in and passionate about.

Can you tell I'm bored and being ignored. ;)

Re: What's your husband's "passion" and does he do it?

  • Yes, my DH is in the IT field and it's what he truly loves.  He is a self-proclaimed geek and loves computers.  He has been asked multiple times at his current job about going the management route, but he has preferred to stay in the area he's in.  He'd rather be hands-on and doing the things himself than just telling others what needs to be done.

  • My husbands passion is flying. His work allows him to do it often but not near as much as he would like. At least most weekends are 3 days for him so he has some time to keep current.

  • He loves what he does, but he gets super excited about home improvement and fixing things.  He says when he retires he wants to be the neighborhood handyman lol

  • DH was a bartender for many years and even did some wine sales during the off seasons (he was a bartender at the beach) up until about 6 years ago when he snapped his achilles tendon playing softball for a work/recreational league.  It was an eye opener as he didn't have any insurance (he was supposed to but his boss d!cked him over).  No health insurance, no disability insurance - NOTHING.  Luckily, he was able to finagle something after hobbling around with a busted achilles for a month and a half, had his surgery, rehab and is back to [somewhat] normal with his synthetic tendon.

Anyway, as a result of our hardships, he got into the field of life insurance.  He sells mostly life, disability and long term care, which is his specialty.  He feels so much better helping people the way he does - versus getting people drunk.  There are so many people that have yet to meet with someone about this and it is really important.  Most people say, "oh, insurance sales - what's he trying to sell me?".  DH is not like that, he really pays attention to what you want/need and what will work best for your family, goals, income, etc.  He enjoys trying his hardest to figure out the best scenario.  Unfortunately, as sales goes, its been tough with our economy.  People are afraid that they're just throwing money away.  He still busts his butt though.  I am proud of him - he has come a long way in the past 4 years!

As an aside, my job that I was passionate about for him was his wine sales.  I had so much wine in my house that I had to use it as furniture! HAHAHA (Kidding of course...kinda).

  • DH is a movie director. He directs and produces animation movies for children. He loves his job. He also loves video games and is creating one based on his last movie. I don't think I've ever seen anyone as happy with their job (except for my mom who was a ballet dancer), and he decided to work in his field even though everybody told him it was a big mistake, that movies don't give you any money (in Peru). He's a pioneer in our country and I'm so proud of him! His dad is a famous economist and both my BILs followed that path, so he was the family's "black sheep" until he became really successful. He used to be a workaholic until we moved in together, then he wanted to be more at home. And since he became a dad he works from home a couple of days a month because some days it is too difficult to leave our smily baby :)

  • I guess my husband is not the only nutty one. ;)
  • He's a pilot. Flying is his passion and his career.

  • Stocks. Sounds weird, but it is true. Finance is his passion and he is a huge geek about it :) He is a CFA so does finance for his job, and at home he loves to and spends a lot of time updating the portfolio, researching, and making me elaborate power point presentations on our portfolio, lol.

His other passion is travel - we share this one. We don't get to do as many international trips now as we did pre-kids, but we still travel quite a bit, both with and without the kids.

  • Languages.  He absolutely loves studying foreign languages.  Someone told him Japanese was the most difficult language for English-speaking people to learn, so he decided to learn it (that's the kind of person he is)--he's taken three semesters of Japanese courses and is impressively good at it.

I'm not interested in the Japanese language or culture particularly, but it's neat to see how great he can be at something he's truly passionate about.  He's also incredibly passionate about music and is the most brilliant musician I've ever heard, but that comes completely naturally and he doesn't have to put a lot of effort into it.  He doesn't play piano nearly as much as he should!

  • DH is an electrical engineer with the navy, so he gets to work on war ships and submarines and stuff, and he loves it. But his "passion" is wood working. We have a 3 car garage that is FILLED with machinery and tools for wood working... he does truly beautiful work, but doesn't get to do it nearly enough. He's built a lot of our furniture, but his dream is to custom build our kitchen cabinetry. Next on his to-do list is a giant rustic-style table with bench seating for our dining room :) He'd LOVE if wood working could be his career, but there's no money in it any more.

  • DH's job is in computer security, which he really enjoys.  He specifically loves penetration testing (and yes, I'm immature enough to laugh every time he says that) and gets to do some of it, but is hopeful that his job will evolve to be exclusively that.  He has several virtual machines set up at home that he can run scenarios on and play around.  Complete geek, but I love him!

  • My husband (and me as well, but this is about him!) is an actor - has been since he was four, is professionally trained and employed, etc. It's not his "pays the bills" job, but he's one of the most in-demand actors in our city and rarely has more than a month between shows. So while it's not his job, it's certainly his career! We're both working to try and cultivate more of the local theatre scene here so that we can potentially turn it into a lucrative thing for both of us.

  • My husband loves his job and is pretty passionate about science (he is a chemist), but I'm not sure it's his overall passion.

I would say his main passion is football. Right now he is as involved as he can be. He has season tickets to our college team and pro team. He is an asst coach for the high school.. and also helps his friend in local recruiting. In his spare time he studies stats from high school level and up.. it is a little ridiculous. I think he would love being a college recruiter full time, or asst coach for a university.. but they travel a lot and unless the money was good enough for me and the kids to come along he says it isn't worth it having to be away.

I think loving what you do is important.

  • Husband's passions are History and Finance. The finance part is his job (CFO at his company). He loves being able to make a business profitable and does a lot of side work for other non-profits as well. As far as the "History" part goes...he loves being a stinking know-it-all and giving you the run down of all things military! So basically it means I am constantly getting "yapped" at about random historical events that he thinks everyone should already know. Gotta love him!

  • My husband is a musician (composer) and that is what he does for a living. He has always loved music and was in a rock band in high school/undergrad before realizing that the really wanted to teach music as well as write it. So, he decided to pursue an academic career - 1 undergrad, 2 Master's and 80% of a PhD later he is truly pursuing his dream.

He knows working in the university world is not all puppies and rainbows and there are definitely challenges but he loves to be able to combine his passion of composing music and teaching students. One more year and this PhD is done!

  • He loves to cook. If we were independently wealthy, he would move us over to France to apprentice under some of those master chefs and learn the art from the masters.

Instead, he's an attorney. His job isn't his passion in the least. He likes to say, he doesn't drink the kool-aid so to speak. His job is a job, yes one that pays considerably well and offers a number of perks, but it's not his passion at all.

With that being said, because of his love of cooking he cooks one kick a$$ Thanksgiving meal every year!

HA! My BIL is an attorney {so is DH and FIL though neither practice anymore} and he LOVES to cook. He thought seriously about becoming a chef before he switched firms. I used to be a chef, so we make some great meals together!

  • DH's passion is race cars, primarily European and American Le Mans series. The closest he gets to pursuing it is watching one race in person each July when ALMS comes to Connecticut. Other than that, he watches races on tv, listens to some podcasts of racing stuff, and follows teams on facebook/twitter.

In real life, DH is a mechanical engineer who writes up repair/overhaul orders for submarine hatches. Unless the US Navy decides to get some race cars, DH will likely never have a job that is his passion.

  • My husband's passion is cooking, but he doesn't do it as a career. He did briefly after culinary school but he mostly went because he enjoys cooking.

People are always amazed that he does all the cooking- but he loves it. He'll spend hours in the kitchen chopping, prepping, making dinner. I like to play "chopped' with him (if you've seen that show) where I give him random ingredients and he makes a meal. So fun!

He always says that if he had to do it every day he wouldn't enjoy it as much.

As far as careers, I think his job is perfect for him which is why he is so good at it and enjoys it so much. He doesn't sit at a desk doing the same thing every day. He has ADD and his environment suits him so well.

  • My DH is a structural engineer. I wouldn't say it is his passion, but he does really love it. He's wanted to do it since he was about five and he plays bridge building games on his phone and downloads apps about stress members. I call him an enginerd.

I would say his passion is soccer though. His dream was always to play MLS soccer, but he didn't ever peruse it. He played in college and still plays twice a week and has season tickets to our MLS team. He also is OBSESSED with fishing, which I would definitely call a passion for him.

  • My husband is an Artist and followed his dream of creating animated films from High School through college and then, the International Art Institute and ended up landing a job at a motion picture film studio 14 years ago. Making movies is his passion and I'm envious of him because he's excited to go to work every single day and truly loves what he does. I never really felt that way and maybe that's because I didn't have a passion when I went through under grad and graduate school; I enjoyed Accounting & Finance and when the grades came easy, I found myself gravitating towards that field. I was great at my job but it was always just a job, you know?

That's exactly how I felt. I was good at it and I enjoyed what I did, but at the end of the day it was very easy to walk away from.

My previous job, which was with DH's current company, I LOVED. Had I never quit there I think I would be a working mom and not a SAHM.

  • My husband's passion is spirituality and religion and he is actually a counselor so he does get to weave in his passion at his work so he's very happy and it makes me happy to see him living it. That's the key to being really happy, is living what you love.

  • Motorcycling.  He absolutely loves it.  We have more gearhead magazines in our home than anybody deserves, lol.  Always 2 or 3 bikes in the garage (plus a dirtbike at the farm).  Our 5 year old already has a 50cc of his own.
