Sleeping in cold weather

I need some help with this and please forgive my ignorance on the subject....being from FL, I've never had to deal with this before. I'm not sure how to dress DD for bedtime now. It's getting into the low 40s here at night and by morning, it's pretty chilly inside. DD has been waking up crying during the night and when I pick her up from the crib, she feels cold. I've been putting her in a fleece footed pajama but maybe it's not enough. What do you all put your LOs in for bedtime during cold weather months? Would it be too much to put a fleece sleep sack OVER the fleece PJ or should I maybe just try putting a long-sleeved shirt under the PJ?

Re: Sleeping in cold weather

  • When it gets really cold here we do fleece footie pjs with a fleece sleep sack over it.  We also use a ceramic space heater in her room in the winter.  C does not sleep well at all if she gets too cold.

  • When it was coldest last winter, we'd put DS in a fleece footer sleeper and a cotton sleepsack. His room temp was in the mid-upper 60's. I have always been afraid of overheating DS so I've always been wary of packing on the layers.

  • At the coldest last year we did a cotton footed pj + fleece sleep sack.  She also has a space heater.  It is cool to the touch and turns off if it is tipped over.  Like MommaG said she wakes up A LOT if she is cold.
  • We decided to try the fleece footed PJs along with a cotton sleep sack tonight and see what happens! Thanks guys!

  • We do footed jammies and a space heater. We also use a blanket (no sleep sack since he can walk because I'm afraid of him tripping if he got up and walked around the crib), but he usually bunches it up and sleeps on top of it.

  • It's been getting into the 40's at night here, too. I've been doing a short sleeve onside, then a fleece footie PJ over top of that, with a light weight blanket on top of him.

    How'd she sleep?

Also, I know you've had it for a little while, but I love you new siggy pic!

  • Lexi has also never been in really cold weather like this before, we are living in Utah (I'm from Southern California, but finished college out here), I am used to it but I was worried about Lexi. Well today it was in the low 40's here. I bought some new jammies for her a couple of weeks ago and they keep her so warm, they have little footies so she is completely warm :) Plus she takes after me and is her own personal heater.

  • We're in Michigan here...40s isn't even something we blink at, lol!  So funny to see all the different places we live in.

DS has always hated being in a sleep sack or swaddled, so we never used any of those.  (I have a bunch and couldn't return them, since I washed them.  Blah)

We just keep the heat turned up to around 72.  He sleeps either in 2 piece jammies (usually Carters), or in the winter we also do fleece one-piece.  Or at least we could last year - he now hates anything that's 1 piece, so time will tell.  It's been in the 40s for the last few days at night, and he's just had on 2 piece jersey jammies and socks, or flannel pants with a sleep shirt and socks.

I am always amazed at how many people use sleep sacks on their toddlers.  Mine would never get any sleep - he'd be too busy whining and trying to get out of it!

  • @jcsumm....

Thank you!! It is from her 12 month photo shoot.

How she slept....I think it helped a bit because she's now making it until 6 am and sometimes a little later and she doesn't wake up screaming in the middle of the night. I'm not sure if the added layer was the solution, though, because she also just got 3 new molars!!! We just moved into our rental yesterday and she did even better last night in her own crib. She had been sleeping in a PNP for the past 3 weeks while we were staying at a friend's house, so that may have been the issue, too!

    @stephdruskinis....

We just moved from FL to WA State 3 weeks ago, so we're still acclimating to the cold weather. We just started using the heater at night a couple of nights ago, so it was pretty chilly inside for sleeping.

As far as the sleep sacks go, DD has been using one since around 3 months old after we stopped swaddling her, so she's used to them. We only put her in the sleep sack right before she goes into the crib at night and she usually just rolls around in her crib until she falls asleep. I watch her on the video monitor sometimes. :)
