Shopping spree

So my dh and I ran into a little unexpected money. We've decided to spend it on some frivolous but nice things for our daughter. Problem is, I'm not sure what to buy. She has quite a few toys, swing, bouncer, jumperoo etc. I just don't know what else to get her. I was thinking of getting her a power wheels, but that idea seems silly since she wont be able to use it for awhile. If you had about 300 to 500 to use for your LO, what would you buy or what have you bought already. We do have a savings for her and are just wanting to use this money for "fun" stuff. I know this is very very very much a first world problem, but I would love to hear your suggestions.

Re: Shopping spree

  • What a horrible problem LOL. I would probably get decorations for her room, a nice toy chest, some cute old fashioned toys from Creative Kids Stuff, or pay for a nice photo session.

  • Yeah, I guess it's silly to classify this as a problem. We just paid for a photo session this past week, which was not included in this money. Wish we would have stumbled upon it then. She does need a toy chest though. Maybe I'll look into that. Thanks!

  • They still make powerwheels?? How awesome is that! :) I would be tempted to get that too and save it for later.

Hm to answer your question, how about a class with your LO? Like a music class. That could be fun.

Maybe you could get her a piece of jewelry for later on and a personalized jewelry box to put it in.

I think you said you live in Hawaii so how about some things for LO for the beach? Maybe a baby tent to keep the sun off and some toys to play with in the sand.

I know! I always wanted a power wheels as a kid. She's definitely going to get one.

We do live in Hawaii but we are PCSing to Omaha in less than two months.

I'll think about the jewelry box. If she's anything like me, she won't ever wear any. Hopefully she's more girly than me.

Do you know where there's a good place to buy one? I live in Hawaii, so ordering one online is almost impossible. I didn't see anything I liked at Babies R US when I looked some time ago.

  • Fun!!

I like the toy chest and jewelry ideas!  What about a swing set or doll house?

  • I would buy all kinds of decorations, frames, ect. for DS's room. A ton of books and probably an Ipod docking station for his dresser.

  • I would probably stock up on some clothes in bigger sizes, get a toy box and then put the rest in a 2 or 3 year CD to earn interest, then when she's 2 or 3, cash in the CD and buy the powerwheels and anything else that might strike your fancy :)  I'm very much the kind of person to save for later instead of spending right now just because I have the cash.  Ya know?

I'm the same exact way about saving and stocking up for the future. My husband is on the opposite end of the spectrum. Because he sold his junk old vehicle, he told me he wanted me to buy her something fun that she can utilize now. Naturally, I would stock up on diapers and clothes and such, but per his request I'll spend the money on something I wouldn't otherwise buy her. I don't think it's enough cash for a cd, however she'll absolutely have a powerwheels when she's a little older. Lol, It's kind of silly but important to me.

Anyhow, I didn't see any toy boxes I liked at target today. The search continues!

  • I would get her one of those V-Tech reader things. My DD already loves reading and I think that is such a great thing. I'd also get some nice clothes, but I'm also baby clothes obsessed :-P

I would get a 4moms mamaroo swing! Coolest thing ever. I'm totally obsessed with it and jealous of your position to buy anything you want! I live in Omaha too! Definately not as exciting as Hawaii!

  • Personally, I would try to spend the money on something that will last a long time. I think I would invest in getting someone to make her a solid wood toy chest...something classic that she could later use as a blanket chest or a hope chest. (My mom still has her hope chest, and I have always wished that I had one.) A cabinet maker or furniture maker should be able to make something nice, and you might also be able to get her one of those pretty combination dollhouse/bookshelf pieces. Plus if you get them made in wood that is native to the islands, it will be a way to commemorate her state of birth. If you tend to move a lot, it could be a way to give her  a connection to her birthplace.
