I never learned but feel like it would be an important skill especially with so many vehicles being automatic now.
I have this irrational fear of being in a horror movie scenerio where I need to get away from a murdering psycho and the only escape is a truck with a stick. If this ever happened I'd be screwed and probably have someone wearing my head as a hat.
My boyfriend in grad school tried to teach me with his car in the mall parking lot after hours. Mall security pulled us over and said, "You have to be 16 to drive!" LOL! I was in my early 20s.
I drove a stick for a couple years in high school so could definitely move the truck for you Smithpaint, but I don't think I'd want one where I live know. I live in the city with loads of traffic and it would be exhausting!
My dad wouldn't let me get my license until I could check my fluids (oil, radiator, windshield), change a tire, drive a stick, and parallel park. He said it was part of the responsibility of being a driver.

I could do them all but drive stick! All of our vehicles were automatic when I learned how. My sisters both learned to drive stick shift when they got a manual transmission vehicle. I am surprised how many said no as well - but it makes me feel better about my lack of ability!
I learned at 18. My step-mom was giving me her old car which is a manual and I had to learn to drive it in a weekend so I could drive it 1000 miles to get it home. So much pressure!

This made me LOL!
An old boyfriend taught me. I was able to drive 2 miles (in the country). That was the only time I tried it; never had any opportunity to again. I wouldn't remember a thing now!
Yep, my first car was an 82 Corolla with a stick. I loved that car. My dad wouldn't change the clutch unitl both my sis & I learned a stick. She was TERRIBLE! I ended up teaching her so I could have my new clutch. lol.
My mom's always had automatics while my dad's always had sticks. I learned the basics of driving on my mom's car, then learned how to drive a stick on my dad's car.
I've only owned two cars and they've both been sticks. I love manual transmission and feel like I have so much more control. Since I always plan to drive my cars to the ground (12+ years with the first, going on 4 with the current) I don't worry about resale value so it's nice to knock an extra $1000 or so off the purchase price.
All my cars have been automatic...but an old boyfriend had a stick and taught me. It is not always pretty...especially 1st gear LOL...but I can do it well enough.
