co-worker smoking

I need some help. Before I got pregnant I was a smoker and could smoke in my office at work. As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I stopped immediately. Most importantly because of my health and the health of the baby and also because I could not stand the smell.  My co-worker I work with on a daily basis and sits very close to me still smokes in the office. I am trying to come up with a nice way to tell her that the smell bothers me and also that she is hurting my baby with second-hand smoke. Please help me with how to approach this topic. Thanks in advance.

Re: co-worker smoking

  • Where do you work that you can smoke indoors? I didn't think there was anywhere left!

I would probably try telling her that the smell of smoke makes you really nauseated and whenever she lights up, start fake dry heaving.

But, you could also be honest and just tell her that you're not comfortable exposing your child to second-hand smoke. However, if your workplace allows smoking indoors, prepare to be told that it's your problem not hers.

  • I agree with PP! Where in the heck can you still smoke in an office? If you aren't ready to tell her you're pregnant, tell her you've got bronchitis and would really appreciate her stepping out for a while. Then, once you tell her you are pregnant, I'd hope she would respect your request for the baby's sake.

Depending on how you want to approach things, you could also get crazy and go to the boss or HR to discuss the possibility of becoming a smoke-free workplace.

  • Wow!  I would go straight to the boss or cooperate and get this "smoking in the office thing" not allowed.  It isn't good for you or anybody for that matter.  I am sorry you are dealing with this.  I would ask my co-worker nicely too, but I would push bigger that the company changes that rule.

If it doesn't change..honestly...I would find another job.  I wouldn't put my unborn baby at risk.

Good luck and I hope things change!!
