Upping LOs calorie intake

At E's one year appt today, the pedi suggested I up her calorie intake because she is in the 98 percentile for height but only the 25th for weight.

She eats like a horse. I can't help it if she's a wild woman who never stops going going going.

She doesn't like eggs or bananas. We are starting WCM and so far she spits that out as well. She eats an avocado and greek yogurt almost every day.

Any suggestions?

I was curious about the replies since we also have a lightweight at just barely 18 lbs. I'm curious that people recommended putting tons of butter or deep frying everything. Is that really the way to go? I know that babies need some fats to grow but it seems like a slightly slim baby would be healthier than one loaded up on oils and breakfast shakes, but what do I know?

  • What about using greek yogurt instead of milk when making mac and cheese (if you give her that). DD loves the 4% milk cottage cheese with fruit too. Instead of butter we put some coconut oil on waffles and pancakes for DD-she loves it. Have you introduced peanut butter? DD likes cheese sticks, graham crackers, freeze-dried fruit ( she could eat the entire bag if we let her). I am not sure about calorie dense, good-for-you foods aside from dairy, nuts and oils. Quinoa with ground meat?
  • My DD was and still is small. I just fed her what she wanted and offered her lots of choices. Her favorites at 1 were pancakes and bananas. I'm not a big fan if upping calories unless LO is not gaining weight. Some babies are just small.

Just FYI, DD didn't pass 20lbs until after 15 months old. Is your LO staying on the same growth curve for weight? If so, then I'd say upping calories is not exactly necessary.

This. Making healthy choices is the most important thing. Unless your kid is losing weight, falling off their curve, or is having issues related to nutrition I think giving them junk is silly. You can add olive oil to food rather putting butter or deep frying things. My son was small and he was a picky eater but none of his doctors ever suggested anything other than helping us find healthy ways to make sure he was meeting his nutritional needs. Not only that is you can't tell healthy weight off one appointment. Unless your baby was higher than the 50% and suddenly dropped to 25% or at her next appointment she falls way below 25 I wouldn't worry. She may hit a growth spurt tomorrow and start packing on the pounds. All of the specialists we've seen for Lo have said that height is a better indicator of health and nutrition than weight.

This is what I have learned as well through all our issues with DS. Weight can fluctuate a lot at his age still.

  • I know you said she doesn't eat egg but this is one of DD's favorites and maybe your LO won't notice the egg when it is mixed with things she likes.

    1 hard boiled egg yolk

1 tbsp of whole milk yogurt (I'm sure you could use Greek)

    1/2 an avocado

    Mash together and serve.

  • Lurker here, and I just wanted to thank you for this post. My DD just had her 12 mo checkup, and she has gained less than a pound since her 9 mo checkup. The pedi basically told me I need to wean and give her lots of solids and 16 oz of WCM a day. I felt like a failure. I'm glad to know I'm not the only mom with an active baby. Although, my DD did fall off the chart at 17 lbs and < 3 %. She just started walking 2 weeks ago, and I think that's what slimmed her down. My DD spits out WCM, too. Her pedi okayed adding a little bit of flavoring to it to get her to like it. We'll see how that goes.

Good luck to you and your DD!

  • We just recently got DS to double his birthweight (yay!). We tried to give him lots of healthy oils, eggs, protein, yogurt, cheese, and nut butters (no nut allergies in the family). If there's something they won't eat by itself, there is always a way to "sneak it in"  :)
