C-sections

How long did your Dr tell you to wait to ttc?

My doc said 9 months but we had an oops last week and I am waiting to poas. What happens if you get pregnant again too early? I wasn't going to try for vbac anyway, just have another c-section again.

Re: How long did your Dr tell you to wait to ttc?

  • Hi, I'm lurking from the 0-3 month board and came over to post the same question. The doctor that discharged me (not my regular OB since he had to leave town the day before I was discharged) told me I had to wait 2 years. Partially because of the C-section and part was to get my diabetes under control. It was undiagnosed and my sugar was out of control. I see my OB on the 19th and I'm going to ask him what he thinks about it. I really want another baby and since I'm 35 I'm worried that I don't have that much time left.

It seems like everyone is told something different! Someone on my month board said their doc told them 6 months. Someone also said that their friend got pregnant 3 months after their c-section and went to term without any complications. I didn't have any complications from my c-section, no pre-e or diabetes, scar healed beautiful. Hopefully it will be ok either way.

  • Why do c-section deliveries need to wait for such a long amount of time? I'm just curious.

  • My OB said I could whenever I felt ready at my 6 week PP checkup. He said most of the healing had already occured by that point. I'm sure it might have been because I am young, in good shape, and my surgery went well/I recovered quickly. I found out I was pregnant when my son was 4.5 months old and he was even comfortable with VBAC being an option (though I didn't end up going that route). My second pregnancy was easier than my first and I carried to term.

With that being said, even if your "oops" was perfectly timed, you still only have a 20% chance of getting pregnant. I would try not to worry too much about it.

  • After my DD was born we were told 18 months to allow everything to "fully" heal. We got pregnant less than a year later, we did lose the baby but I don't believe it had anything to do with my previous C. Two weeks after our loss we got pregnant again and I just delivered our beautiful baby boy at 38 weeks with no issues. So I was exactly 1 year or so from my previous C when we got pregnant, DD was 21 months old at the time of his birth. This time we haven't been given a time frame but OB did say 3rd C's are riskier so we are not sure if we will try again or not, but if we do we will wait at least 2 years just to be safe.

  • My dr. told me to wait til at least 6 months pp but we had an oops and I am due again in May, only 11 months after DS2's birthday.

The dr. just said they would watch my incision closely to make sure it does ok. They said that ruptures usually only happen when a woman is trying for a VBAC because of the pushing and pressure on the uterus. There is a possibility but a very low one is what they said when I went in for my 1st ob appt. for this pregnancy.

Maybe it just depends on the doctor and the person. I hope everything goes well! Keep us posted.

I am trying not to worry but I hate the waiting! Still have another week before a test would be positive if that is the case. The month we got pregnant with DS I wasn't tracking or anything and we only did the deed 2x that whole month- so it could happen! lol

  • I was told 6 months to TTC, they like to see 15-18 months minimally between surgeries.

  • I was told one year. We had accidentally DTD once during a fertile phase four months after my baby was born... that one time resulted in my now being 17 weeks pregnant with another healthy baby boy! I expected a stern lecture from my OB about it, but actually they are saying that there's no reason I can't try for a VBAC if all goes well. I am 40, and we had tried for nine years for our first baby, so I will gladly take the risk of having to have another c-section if it means having a sibling for our son!

  • My doctor suggested 18-24 months. DD1 was 12 weeks when we got pregnant with DD2. Ooops. I had a repeat c-section and the girls and I are both healthy and I am expecting our third and final. My recovery for the second was a little tougher than the first, but I made it through!

  • 6 months for both. After my first passed away she called me at 4 months and said that my tests came back fine and it would be okay if we started trying sooner than 6 months. I got pregnant 2 weeks after that phone call. My 2nd was born a year and 20 days after my first and my pregnancy/rcs was fine.
