Still startling?

DS still has a pretty fierce startle reflex. His arms do it, but I've noticed that the issue is more with his legs. When he startles his legs will kick straight out and up and jerk his whole body which wakes him up guaranteed. Even the swaddle can't muffle that kind of thing. Any suggestions? Anyone else notice their little one doing this?

Re: Still startling?

  • My LO does this ...His arms go straight up and his hands open up and are stiff like the hands of an armadillo. I normally will put a light pillow on his body when I lay next to him. I noticed that when he startles, it doesnt wake him up. I only do this when I am next to him, though.

  • DD's reflex seems to have mostly disappeared, although she does get startled very easily in general - loud noises really seem to frighten her.

I was actually told by a doctor that it usually goes away sometime around 4 months, which seems to be the case for us.

  • DS gets startled sooooooo easily.  He will wake up and actually give a scared cry which in turn makes me cry Crying Then it takes me 10-15 min. to calm him down and get him back to sleep.  I feel really horrible when he gets startled.
  • Glad I'm not alone. I tried to go without a swaddle one night and he was all over the place. Needless to say we are going to still swaddle even if he does try to break free lol. I feel so bad when he startles, and it's awful having to get him back to sleep especially because he tends to do it most about 3 to 5 minutes after I lay him down. No wonder we can't get him to sleep in the crib yet lol
