Hi. We are pregnant with baby 3 and just had our 20w ultrasound in which the doctor mentioned the baby had a Choroid Plexus Cyst on his/her brain. I had never heard of this and he explained it that 999 out of 1000 when this is the only thing found it turns out to be absolutely nothing and just a normal part of brain development. However, it is a soft marker for Down's (and as I read online more of a marker for Trisomy 18) and he was referring us to have a level 2 u/s. That is scheduled for next Thursday and I am trying so hard to not worry. A lot of what I read online supports his "don't worry" mentality...but then I start reading about Trisomy 18 stories and some of their stories started this same way. Babies growth and heart looked fine he said. The u/s tech pointed out the 4 chambers of the heart and showed us his/her feet. The doctor mentioned everything looked ok. She did say the due date was measuring 4 days later than my current one but that was still within the normal varying range.
Did anyone else see this? What was the outcome? I want to hear it all....good and bad so please be honest. TIA
Re: XP: Choroid Plexus Cyst at 20w u/s
Your doc isn't lying to you. It is absolutely more than likely nothing to be worried about. Read through the 2nd tri. I bet you can find at least 5 of these posts within the last 6 weeks. It's very common to find them on u/s, but have them turn out to be nothing to worry about.
Your Level II u/s will yield more concrete information, and you'll get to see some pretty awesome detailed views of your growing baby. Try to relax, and remember that until there's actually something to worry about, there's no sense in worrying.
Nate had one. They didn't tell me about it but we sneaked and read the us report in my chart.
He has micro deletions on chromosome 1 which caused brain anomalies. He had no other soft markers, nor did the brain anomaly show up on the u/s.
Stop worrying.
I will be the 1 out of 100 that did turn out to be something but our story ends in good news.
I don't post much on here but I can totally relate to you and feel it might be good for you to hear our story. They found a choroid plexus cyst in my sons brain at our big ultrasound and the doctor played the it is probably nothing don't worry card as well. He said there were no other markers and a lot of times these cysts resolve on their own. The doctor said once baby (since we didn't know sex) was born they would do a quick ultrasound to see if the cyst was still there or if it had resolved on its own.
When my son was born they told us the cyst was still there and they were going to have us do an MRI when DS was 3 weeks old to learn more about his cyst. We were then referred on to other specialists. Thankfully DS met all of his milestones and showed no signs of the cyst affecting him at all. They gave us signs to watch out for and none of which we ever saw.
At 16 months and the suggestion of our neurosurgeon DS did have a fenestration done to allow the fluid in the cyst to communicate with the 3rd ventricle. His surgery went well and he is thriving now.
At 4 years old you would never know about him having a cyst. A lot of days I forget he even has it. So although our son's cyst didn't go away he is now doing amazing.
If you have any questions feel free to let me know.
