Trying to Get Pregnant

outline of a line in pink (first response)

I tested this morning using First Response - I've used this test a million times (I'm a compulsive tester during the latter part of the two week wait) and when negative, always get a very clear negative. When I was pregnant with my son two years ago, my initial positive was a VERY  faint pink line. Today, I got some sort of weird outline of a line in pink. I wasn't expecting it to be positive, so I read it after taking a shower (probably 10 minutes later, but not tons of time later). I've heard evaporation lines are usually clear or gray. This was pink, but like two lines on either side of where you'd expect to see the pink line. I tested with a Clearblue Easy test this afternoon, and got a negative. I'm not sure of their sensitivity levels.

Has anyone experienced this? I'm probably due for my period today, so I'd expect a more solid pink line if I was indeed pregnant. But, it has been a crazy month and I'm not sure if I ovulated late or what the deal is. Ordinarily, my periods are pretty regular but this month may be weird.

Any input much appreciated.

  • Sorry, I haven't experienced that exactly.  I have looked at tests after the window and they looked weird though.

I remember reading cases where people have seen something after the window and ended up KU, but better to not get your hopes up, IMO.

Test again tomorrow morning or in a few days if AF hasn't come yet.  FX for you!

Have you been to this site?  It has lots of good info:

    https://www.peeonastick.com/hptfaq.html

    7. What's an evaporation line? Evaporation ("evap") lines result with the test's antibody strip just looks slightly different than the space around it. There is a line of antibodies (usually made from mouse cells) in the Control and Test section. The Control line binds with any liquid and turns pink (or blue, in tests using blue dye.) The Test/Result line turns pink only if pregnancy hormone is detected. If not, the moisture passes over this strip and does not turn pink. It may, however, become more visible when the light hits the moisture on the strip-- it may appear gray, colorless, like a "dent" in the test, or like a "ghost line." It may appear at any time-- as soon as the urine hits it, after a few minutes as the test absorbs the moisture, or after the 10-minute time limit. It may appear when the test is drying, or after it has dried. It may disappear as the test is drying, or after the test has dried, or not disappear at all.

The simple fact is that there is always "something there" that is slightly visible-- it's simply the antibodies on the test that would turn pink in the presence of hCG. When the test becomes wet, or as it dries, or after it dries, the antibody strip may become more visible. Therefore, all tests may have them. It is not a defect; it's just how tests are made.

A real positive is identified by its color (pink or blue, whatever the color of the test's dye is) and its appearance within 10 minutes of urinating on the stick. A line that appears after 10 minutes, regardless of color, must be considered an evap line and is caused by the test's chemicals changing. HPT's are rapid assay diagnostics, which means any results appearing after the "rapid" time limit of 10 minutes are invalid.

  • FRER's are more sensitive than CB.  Also, do you have any internet strips?  Those are even more sensitive!

Go out and buy more FRER's!

  • Sorry no pics, guys (at work). I will be astounded if it turns out to be positive, ultimately, as this is our first month really, really, trying and I'm pushing 40. I've just never had this happen (I'm a compulsive stick person). I would assume it was evaporation, but the outline of the line was totally faint pink, and that really threw me off.
  • Check out peeonastick.com very helpful. FMU is more concentrated so maybe thats y u possibly got a neg this afternoon. I'm kinda in the same boat today. Read the test after time limit so go to retest tomorrow because its invalid after time limit.

  • Did you read it within the time limit?

Was the line pink or gray?

Why not retest with another FRER? I don't think they are sold in individual packages, but with one or two more. Drink a soda and hold it for three hours. Pee again, voila, problem solved.

When in doubt grab a digital and try it.

I read it about 10 minutes after peeing on it (jumped in the shower). I've got a feeling if I used another FRER, I'd just get a negative as I drink tons of water during the day. The digital was negative (clearblue easy, but somebody said that is less sensitive). I guess I'll wait until tomorrow and try again.

Oh - and it was pink.

  • I've been using FRERs this cycle and I have a theory that if you look hard enough, you can see where the line is supposed to go if you get one. This is unsubstantiated by anything other than the fact that I've definitely been seeing something on some of my tests, but it's not a line and it's not getting darker, and it's only visible in certain lights. My husband has seen it too, so I'm not imagining it. But it's definitely not a line. So perhaps that's what you're seeing. Or I could be making things up. Take it with a grain of salt.

I reeeeaaaaaaaaaaaallly want to see a picture of yours! And if nothing else, update us tomorrow!

I promise to never forget that this little dude deserves just as much love after the baby comes as he has now.

Any test read outside the time limit in the instructions are invalid. Retest tomorrow and wait the 3 minutes to jump in the shower.

I am not meaning to sound snarky, but the very real possibility of a BFP makes me watch that window with a timer. It's 3 minutes! Sit there and wait that way you know you are getting accurate results.

Obviously (no brainer), I will re-do this tomorrow. I was just curious if others had experienced this. I just assumed it would be fully negative, as usual, and as I mentioned, I am a compulsive test-taker.

This happened to me.  There was a line on a wondfo after the 5 minutes (maybe an hour later).  I tested later that day and it was a clear line.

But I didn't assume it was positive because it was after the time frame.

The answer to your second question is yes. I have looked at FRERs 15mins ,30mins and an hour after initial dip. There is a line but its an evap or slightly pink.

I've taken many of these (more than I like to admit), and have never had this experience in minutes, hours, or days after taking the test, which is why I had asked. Thanks.

  • I wonder if it had something to do with the steam from the shower?
