So pissed at the doctor

I'm not happy with their pediatrician and the plan was to switch them to a new one (that we already picked out) for their 9 month well visit.  I figured if they got sick I'd rather someone with a history see them.  I don't know why since I don't think very highly of their doctor, and now I'm seeing how wrong I was!

They've been sick off and on for two weeks.  Two weekends ago it was just a bad cold, we didn't even bother with the doctor.  This past weekend Olivia got a fever, we brought her in Friday and she had an ear infection and brought her in again Monday when she had a bad allergic reaction to the amoxicillin (covered in a bad rash).  Natalia had a low grade fever on Sunday that broke right away with Tylenol and never came back, but then it came back yesterday.  I kept them home from daycare today and H and my mom took them back to the doctor this afternoon.  We saw a different doctor who said that it's viral and highly contagious!  I specifically asked our doctor both days if it was viral and contagious because of daycare and not only did he tell me no, he actually wrote out a note for daycare saying so.  So they've gone all week and now possibly exposed the kids to whatever they have.  My mom also asked if we have to avoid giving Natalia amoxicillin and the doctor looked at her like she was an idiot (according to my mom).  She asked my mom why she would think that and my mom said because they're identical twins and the doctor said one has nothing to do with the other.  Everything I've read has said that while it's not a guarantee, Natalia is much more likely to have an allergy to it since Olivia does.  She also said there's nothing we can do for either of them except give Tylenol if they have a fever, and to bring them back Friday if they're still sick.

I'm so frustrated!  I don't know if I should bring them back Friday if they're still sick or if I should just have their records transferred now and go to the new doctor.  I hate to jump to a new doctor in the middle of something.  Even more annoying is the fact that they turn 9 months next week, so we're not far from their well visit.

Jump ship now!!!  See if the new doctor can get them in any earlier.  If you explain that the girls are sick and your old office is giving you contradicting info they might be able to get you in a bit sooner.

I agree.  It sounds as if you have been unhappy for a while and this is just another reason to switch them sooner.  I hope they feel better soon!

  • Are you sure the rash is a reaction?  Ben has a rash after having a fever for a few days.  It is a viral thing, so he didn't need antibiotics - we could just give him meds to manage the fever if needed.  According to our pedi, the rash is completely normal and often happens after a fever when there is a viral thing.  There is nothing you need to do to treat the rash if they aren't itchy or uncomfortable.  We were just told not to overdress him and it will go away in a few days.

It sounds like your girls have something very similar to what Ben has.  If it would make you feel better though, take them to the new doc so you don't have to worry.

Our normal doctor said that he was 99.9% sure that it was a reaction to the amoxicillin and not viral, but that if Natalia got sick to bring them in because that could indicate that it was viral.  Now the new doctor is saying, nope, definitely viral, but she wouldn't even look at Olivia or answer any questions about her unless they went back out and signed her in.  They only signed in Natalia because we've been with Olivia twice in the past 5 days and just brought her because the first doctor said that Natalia being sick could impact their diagnosis of her.  Why they heck should I pay two co-pays when they got it wrong?  Would it really have killed her to answer whether or not this meant that Olivia did not actually have a reaction to the antibiotics?  I know that is just me being ridiculous and cheap - and if we have to bring them somewhere on Friday I'm definitely making appointments for both of them and paying two co-pays (which we've done every single other time!) - but this annoyed me.

And yes, I've been annoyed with them for numerous things.  They've been on Zantac since 6 weeks and the prescription that I picked up last week - 7 months later - was the FIRST time that both prescriptions were for the right amounts and doses.  Every other time they called it in wrong (I verified that it was their error and not the pharmacy's).

  • From everything you said, I'd change ASAP. You need your babies to feel better and it doesn't sound like they have their crap together.

Google Roseola images.  We thought our baby was having an allergic reaction to omnicef, but it turned out the younger two both had Roseola, a highly contagious virus that ends in a rash.

Hmm, it could very well be that.  The rash is just on her head, neck, back and chest, not really much on her arms, legs, hands or feet.  It would be really nice if she's not allergic to amoxicillin because it sounds like there's quite a few things she won't be able to have if she is actually allergic.

That is exactly where it was for my little guy too.  It showed up on his head first and then moved to the back of his neck, his back and then his tummy.  Did the rash show up about 12-24 hours after the fever broke?

I am allergic to pretty much every antibiotic as well as bee venom and always get hives on the backs of my arms and my stomach first.  I thought it was weird when my little guy's rash showed up on his head and back first.

  • Jen I am pissed for you..  The second doctor that refuesed to even look at your DD unless you signed in AGAIN, and payed another copay, after the first doctor misdiagnosed to begin with (who is partner in practice with him, so they are suppose to have eachother's back ect..), has F-ed up bedside manner, and I would  not pay another dime to their practice. I would go now..

I would also let the practice manager or office administrator know you are leaving the practice and why you are leaving. If your doctor is writing incorrect Rx dosages, and letters to DCP about a condition your DD had not being contagious, those are both valid concerns that could have negative impact on a child's heath! The feedback would be a service for other patients.

    Your doctor sounds awful!

Fever broke Sunday morning, rash showed up Monday night.  She had some spots on her cheek, but it's common for her to have some baby acne there.  Then it spread on her face and head and we undressed her for bath time and she was COVERED.  Yet the DCP had seen nothing during the day (and we saw nothing that morning), so it came on quick.  We started the medicine on Saturday morning so I was surprised that it took two days to show up if it was an allergic reaction.

I should have changed way earlier.  The reason I didn't is because my sister used the same practice and the practice was centrally located between our place and my parent's and they were going to my parent's house every day while we worked.  I knew my sister would be really mad if we switched (she had free state insurance so she was limited in where she could go and is irrational and would get angry if I said that I thought he was incompetent), so with that and the good location I just left it.  Now she doesn't go there anymore and they go to daycare by us so it's easier to switch.  I just feel really bad that I didn't do it sooner.

  • We are changing pedi at 9 months also.  I like our doctor to a point but LO had monthly ear infections that turned into getting them a week after not being on meds.  Her ear drums ruptured last week.  I called an ENT and they wanted to do tubes asap because they said that once they become that frequent and so bad they rupture the ear drum it can cause hearing issues.  I called her pedi to tell her and they actually yelled at me for "going over her head" and getting another opinion.  I'm sorry I'm concerned and you weren't so I'm doing what I think is best for LO.  We will be going to a new dr.

I say switch now and make sure she really is allergic and that it's not just viral.  I highly believe in 2nd opinions it sounds like you need one since you are getting conflicting info.  Good luck and I hope the girls feel better soon.

  • I'm on the "Jump Ship" bandwagon!!!  If you're planning on doing it anyway, do it now...when there's an issue, to see how they'll be treated "in time of need" as opposed to just regular visits.  Hope they get to feeling better soon!

  • I say change now, and let the old doctor know exactly why you're switching.

I'm allergic to amoxicillin, and break out in a non-itchy but definitely there rash pretty much head to toe when I have it. However, I don't seem to be allergic to penicillin or any of the other "icillins." So if she is allergic, it might not be the end of the world in terms of antibiotics. But I hope she's not.

  • Meg, that's good to know.  Considering that doctor #2 is "positive" that it's viral I'm inclined to think that she's not allergic anyway, but I'll ask the new doctor.

I'm calling this morning to have their records faxed to the new doctor.  The amoxicillin we were supposed to give twice a day, the new antibiotics once a day.  Well I screwed up and gave it to Olivia at 6 am, then again at 7pm.  I looked online and it seemed like she would likely just have diarrhea, but I told my mom and H to mention it to the doctor when they took Natalia in yesterday.  H didn't tell me because he knew how pissed I would be and that we were switching anyway, but my mom said that the doctor went off on a rant about how she doesn't understand how parents can be so irresponsible and how they print right on there how much/how often to give it.  First of all, I screwed up!  I'm lucky that it wasn't with a medicine that would have more serious side effects from overdosing, and I realize that.  But I've had two sick babies for two weeks who aren't sleeping so I'm not sleeping and I work full time.  I'll be more careful going forward obviously, but mistakes happen.  Second of all, for MONTHS the dosing has been wrong on Olivia's Zantac prescription.  So don't stand there and go on and on about how we just need to read your instructions when they've been wrong for a very long time and you can't get your act together even though I call and complain each time.  Assholes.

  • Just called and they said it takes 3-4 weeks to send over records!  They have electronic records and I called the new doctor to see if there was any way we could get in there for the 9 month appointment and the receptionist said that it's a matter of hitting a button, printing them out, and faxing them over.  She was shocked that it takes that long and said it takes them 1-2 days.  I asked if I could just go pick them up and was told that it's the same wait time, plus a $0.65/page charge to get them in person.  I hate this place.

Jen--Just an FYI, but I asked my husband about this last night, and he said allergic rashes for that antibiotic usually only show up a week after the first time they are exposed to the antibiotic--and that a rash appearing in only a day or two would be extremely rare.  He also said that viruses often cause rashes in babies--just part of their immature immune systems.  Obviously not medical advice, but I am glad you are going to a new doctor!  Just randomly declaring that an entire class of useful antibiotics is off the table due to a very non-likely reason is pretty poor judgment in my opinion!

  • Sooner, good to know.  I called to have their records switched and they said it takes 3-4 WEEKS to transfer the records, with no way to expedite them.  The new office was shocked that it takes so long, but said that they can't see us without the records.  So we're stuck here for their 9 month checkup. That is ridiculous, but unfortunately, they are within HIPAA guidelines (30 days).  What a crappy, crappy place.  I don't think our state has any guidelines that make them do it quicker than that.  Did you talk to the other office about doing their 9 month at closer to 9 months and 2 or 3 weeks?  It would delay it a little, but they should have the records by then.

  • The first thing I did was check the law, lol. I think they are in violation for the fees - if I pick it up in person they charge $0.65/page and it looks like they can only charge $0.45/page, but I suppose that's neither here nor there. The new doctor strongly suggested doing the appointment on time, especially since the have to get shots as that would push back their 12 month shots. So we're stuck for 4 more weeks...
