Babies: 0 - 3 Months

night time feedings

DS is 2 weeks old and has such a hard time falling back to sleep after night time feedings (he's bottle fed BTW).  I only change him if necessary, limit the amount of talking/interaction, etc but nothing seems to be working.  I know he'll grow out of this but I have a 3 year old that's up at 7am every morning for the day who I have to entertain as well.  I just don't know how to cope with this anymore.  Last night he woke up at 2am and didn't go back to sleep until 8am this morning!  Anyone have any advice for me?  Ugh, it's gonna be a long day...

Re: night time feedings

  • You may have already tried this but have you put him in the swing or bouncy seat to sleep?  Desperate times call for desperate measures!  DD used to sleep in the bouncy seat some nights.

  • This doesn't work when I do it, but works wonders when DH does... what about swaddling extra snug and holding him close and rocking him and holding binky to his mouth?

Things I've done that have worked with my LO sometimes: offering an extra ounce or two- sometimes DS needed to be "topped off" before he would fall back asleep. Letting DS fall asleep on my chest- of course I had to nap that way too or DS would wake up.

Is your DS fussy and noisy if you were to try to put him down during these nighttime awake periods? I'm just now finding out when my LO is 6 weeks old that if he's not completely asleep when I put him down that sometimes he just lays there quietly on his own, happy as a clam and I can fall back asleep.

  • We have a good nighttime routine down pat.  When she starts fussing I get her up, change her right away, then feed her, pat her back until she burps, then rub her back clockwise until she falls asleep.  It's (usually) within around 10 minutes.  I also turn her lamp off after I change her and have a scentsy thing in her room that I keep on since the light is really minimal.  On her early morning feeding around 5 or 6, she usually falls back asleep, but sometimes decides that's when she wants to play.  It's hard to reign in that nonsense.

    Good luck!

This is what I do as well with the late night feedings I am charged with.  I wrap the boy up really tight after feeding him, and I mean TIGHT, and then I stand up and start rocking while I hold the binky in his mouth.  Works every single time and never takes more than 20 minutes.

My guess is, at two weeks, your LO is waking himself up multiple times if he is not swaddled tight and proper. They are just so shaky and sense-sensitive at that age, that without being swaddled I do not how a two week old could ever get to sleep at any time of day.

I've tried swaddling him and he really dislikes it.  My DD didn't like it either when she was a baby.

Receiving blanket perhaps? At least with that the legs can be wrapped up without the arms being locked down. Even at 6 weeks our LO is startled so easily while he is falling asleep, even by a cough or sneeze. I don't know how he ever would have fallen asleep without the swaddle.  Most of the time he does not like it when I put him in it, but after he realizes his arms are not coming out of there, he self soothes and he is good to go.
