Placenta in front? How does that work?

I'm schedule for a CS, but my last ultrasound should an anterior placenta -- it's on the front wall.  How does this work for the C?  They don't cut through it, do they?

Thanks.

Re: Placenta in front? How does that work?

  • I'm not really sure how it works, per se, but I know that it didn't seem to be an issue for me.  I had a scheduled CS, but my water broke a few days early, and after laboring all day, I failed to progress, so they went ahead with an unscheduled CS.

It had been such a long day that it never occurred to me to ask about the anterior placenta being an issue, but as I said, it didn't appear to be a problem at all.  The whole thing took maybe 10 minutes from start to finish.

    Good luck to you!

  • As long as they know the placenta is anterior, it isn't a problem.  I had an anterior placenta last time, and a c/s, and it wasn't an issue.  I have no idea how they dealt with it, but things were fine.

  • Typically they just check to see where the placenta is via ultrasound the week of your CS - if the placenta is laying low on the front, they may have to do the cut in a different area or in a different direction. If it is high, it usually doesn't affect the standard CS cut. The NEVER cut into the placenta unless it is a life and death emergency for the mother.

  • I had an anterior placenta.  Your c/s incision will be very low, below the placenta.

  • Not a problem. I've had 4 c-sections and an anterior placenta each time.
