Claire vs Clare (nn for Clara)

Clara is one of the top girl names we're considering.  While I don't think that Clara needs a nn, if I did happen to call her Claire/Clare for short sometimes, which do you think would be the best spelling?

Re: Claire vs Clare (nn for Clara)

  • I prefer the spelling Claire, but for a nn for Clara, I would use Clare.

I agree with this. I voted for Clare, but only as a nickname for Clara. If it were a stand alone name I'd choose Claire for sure.

     Ditto.

  • I voted Clare for all the reasons above, but usually this kind of nickname (not a formal nickname, but a casual abbreviation of a name, like when you call someone named Lisa Lis, or Mary Mare-- I'm assuming that's what you're thinking) doesn't require an official spelling.

Agreed, I wouldn't worry about it!

This is what I was thinking.

I agree with all of PP's reasoning for choosing Clare.

As for not needing an official spelling... you may find that your DD will appreciate you establishing one though. Take my name Cassie (full Cassandra) NN Cas but it's pretty half and half with people also spelling it Cass, with 2 s's, and that drives me nuts! I wish it had been established, at least among family, when I was little.

  • Specifically as a nn for Clara, I would go with Clare (based on your choices). However, my mn is Clair. This is to honor my grandmother Clara. Just thought I'd offer up another option!
