Dr said if they sleep well, its not ADHD...true/false?

Not my dr, but my aunts. She just got custody of her grandkids  and thought one had ADHD. When she went to have them evaluated, she was told ADHD kids either dont take naps or dont get the 8-10 hrs of sleep or take forever to fall asleep...etc.

My 3yo DS takes naps daily (falls asleep in less than 5 mins) and sleeps on avg 11 hrs per night with no fighting/crying. He has been this way since 10 weeks old, with the exception of bed transitions/sickness/a short bout of night terrors.

The dr said there are rare cases in which a good sleeper does have ADHD, but they are rarely medicated. Is this doc a quack?? I have never heard this.

  • Yeah, that doesn't sound right to me. DS has been diagnosed yet, but I will say that his symptoms are always much worse when he's tired. But that doesn't mean they disappear when he's not. He can be fully rested (10 to 11 hours a night) and still be hell on wheels.

  • Auntie,

Out of curiosity, does your DS also have anxiety disorder?   My DS does and we are struggling through horrible sleep issues.   I wondered if the good sleep at your house happened when both ADHD and the anxiety disorder were treated, or if he was always a good sleeper.?

  • So I read your subject line to my husband and he gave me this "are you serious?" look and promptly said "FALSE!"

DH has ADHD and apparently slept and napped quite well as a child.

Nowadays - another story but yeah there you go.
